Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

1 Samuel 28

2Saul and the Medium at Endor

3 Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land.

4 The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem, while Saul gathered all Israel and set up camp at Gilboa. 5 When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart. 6 He inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets. 7 Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.”

“There is one in Endor,” they said.

8 So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. “Consult a spirit for me,” he said, “and bring up for me the one I name.”

9 But the woman said to him, “Surely you know what Saul has done. He has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why have you set a trap for my life to bring about my death?”

10 Saul swore to her by the Lord, “As surely as the Lord lives, you will not be punished for this.”

11 Then the woman asked, “Whom shall I bring up for you?”

“Bring up Samuel,” he said.

12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!”

13 The king said to her, “Don’t be afraid. What do you see?”

The woman said, “I see a ghostly figure[a] coming up out of the earth.”

14 “What does he look like?” he asked.

“An old man wearing a robe is coming up,” she said.

Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.

15 Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?”

“I am in great distress,” Saul said. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”

16 Samuel said, “Why do you consult me, now that the Lord has departed from you and become your enemy? 17 The Lord has done what he predicted through me. The Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David. 18 Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the Lord has done this to you today. 19 The Lord will deliver both Israel and you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.”

20 Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, filled with fear because of Samuel’s words. His strength was gone, for he had eaten nothing all that day and all that night.

21 When the woman came to Saul and saw that he was greatly shaken, she said, “Look, your servant has obeyed you. I took my life in my hands and did what you told me to do. 22 Now please listen to your servant and let me give you some food so you may eat and have the strength to go on your way.”

23 He refused and said, “I will not eat.”

But his men joined the woman in urging him, and he listened to them. He got up from the ground and sat on the couch.

24 The woman had a fattened calf at the house, which she butchered at once. She took some flour, kneaded it and baked bread without yeast. 25 Then she set it before Saul and his men, and they ate. That same night they got up and left.

Saul can't plead ignorance on his consulting a medium. After all, HE is the one who just made it illegal!

We Give Thanks To You,

Your Faithfulness and Lovingkindness transcends Anything We can imagine or comprehend.
Almighty God,
We Come before You This Morning,
Full of Awe and Thanksgiving,
To Worship and Praise You,
For You Alone Are Holy;
You Alone Are Worthy;
You Alone Are The One True God.
King Of The Universe, we Thank You For your Wonderful Word,
Which Constantly Reminds Us of Your Faithfulness.
We Thank You For The People Through Whom You Have Given Us Your Holy Word, Your Law, and Your Messiah.
We take this moment of our day to lift them up in Prayer to You, as per Your Holy Word, and According To Your Promise.
We are appalled and saddened by the immense persecution that has gone on against your People,
Sometimes by people of our own nationality or faith.
LORD, Please Forgive us.
And Bring Our nation into Accord With Your Word.

We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According to Your Will and Promise.
We Pray For The Leaders and People of Our Beloved USA,
that They Will Look to You for the Protection
and Prosperity of our Nation.

And Achish said unto David, Know thou assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men. And David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy servant can do.

And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make thee keeper
of mine head for ever.

Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even
in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.

And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa.

Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.

And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.

And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?

And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.

Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.

And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul.

And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.

And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.

And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.

Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?

And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David:

Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.

Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.

And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said unto him, Behold, thine handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words which thou spakest unto me.

Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength, when thou goest on thy way.

But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed.

And the woman had a fat calf in the house; and she hasted, and killed it, and took flour, and kneaded it, and did bake unleavened bread thereof:

And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

The Big Point of our story today is, of course, the prohibition against consulting mediums or spirits, which goes all the way back to the Torah. There are enough passages in the Torah to indicate that God wasn't just kidding when He forbade this practice. For many centuries, Catholics, Protestants, and Jews observed this prohibition, and mediums and spiritists were more likely to be found in a carnival or sideshow than in polite society. We are blessed in America, however, with our Beloved First Amendment, which enshrines Freedom OF Religion (NOT "FROM" religion, as some may argue). In the late 19th Century, Helena Blavatsky developed an occult philosophy which brought a lot of this "forbidden religion" into aristocratic parlors and rescued it from the fringes of society. Although her movement started in the UK, it quickly spread to America. Madame Blavatsky died from the Flu, just like millions of "unenlightened" un-spiriual, ordinary Joes.

During the 1960's the "hippie movement" brought about an interest in Eastern Mysticism, probably because of the Beatles' brief enthusiasm with the Indian Guru Mahareshi Mahesh Yogi. This made Hindu mysticism very popular, although any real Hindu Scholar will tell you that these folks were not "Real" Hindus.

People in the West soon became bored with this, although there are still meditation centers around that teach deep breathing and relaxation techniques. But, people who are dissatisfied and searching needed more. Along came The New Age Movement. Along with an overwrought attention to the Ecology, "New Age" combines Hindu, Buddhist, Native American, Modern Psychology, Holistic Health Methods, Pantheism, etc into a big amorphous bundle. Now, I love this beautiful Planet, given to us by Almighty God, and I believe with all my heart that we are to be Good Stewards of this amazing gift, and do what we can to keep it beautiful.

In fact, that is a command of God. Even when I wasn't a believer, I don't think I would EVER drop even a candy wrapper on the street, or dump toxins in my drinking water. BUT...I digress.

My point is, of course, that there is nothing new under the sun. One could argue that it wasn't really Samuel that was raised up, but some malevolent spirit that was sent to deceive Saul. It doesn't matter. What DOES matter is that Saul knew what he was doing was wrong, and did it anyway. He was the very one who had exiled all the mediums, and here he was, seeking one out.

It is kind of like the Big Shot Champion of the "Me Too" movement being outed as a serial offender and getting away with it.

Times don't change much, do they?

Jesus is Lord of ALL. When I was first being wooed by the Holy Spirit, I actually tossed coins and consulted the I Ching to see if following Jesus was the right thing to do! (yes. I am embarrassed now.) I heard of another person who consulted astrological tables to determine if Jesus is Lord. We both got positive responses. He is able to get His message across—even through normally considered anti-Christian means. He is the greater One.
