Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)
1 Samuel 13
Israel Without Weapons
16 Saul and his son Jonathan and the men with them were staying in Gibeah[e] in Benjamin, while the Philistines camped at Mikmash. 17 Raiding parties went out from the Philistine camp in three detachments. One turned toward Ophrah in the vicinity of Shual, 18 another toward Beth Horon, and the third toward the borderland overlooking the Valley of Zeboyim facing the wilderness.
19 Not a blacksmith could be found in the whole land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears! 20 So all Israel went down to the Philistines to have their plow points, mattocks, axes and sickles[f] sharpened. 21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel[g] for sharpening plow points and mattocks, and a third of a shekel[h] for sharpening forks and axes and for repointing goads.
22 So on the day of the battle not a soldier with Saul and Jonathan had a sword or spear in his hand; only Saul and his son Jonathan had them.

A few years ago, I watched an expose' on TV about sub-standard airplane parts , made in China, that were causing horrible airline accidents. Some of these parts were finding our way into out own military airplanes and weapons systems!
An entire generation has become addicted to smart phones and tablets. These are made in huge factory cities in China too.
I have read the Book of 1 Samuel many times in the 35 years that I have studied the Bible, but I am finding this particular study to be very similar to our own situation, right now. Certain truths transcend the millennia.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

I have a couple of stories today that were brought to mind by today's reading. They are very recent and fresh in my mind.
1. The Horrible Drawer Guides I live in a trailer, and so I accept the fact that some of the building materials used in its construction are not "top-of-the-line". So I wasn't too surprised when my kitchen cabinet drawers came off the rails, spilling cutlery, knives, hand tools and whatnot onto the floor. I carefully removed the drawers and discovered that, unlike quality drawers, these were held in place by little plastic clips, which crumbled in my hand. There is no way to repair them except by replacing the whole cabinet base unit with something else. I'm thinking maybe an old bureau or credenza. At least then I know the drawers will be on wooden runners and will not crumble into dust. I expressed this to my sister. She said,
"Make sure it is an OLD bureau that you use. My entire bedroom set, which I paid a lot of money for at a really nice furniture store, HAS THE SAME PLASTIC CLIPS IN THE DRAWERS."

2. Real People Doing Real Stuff Has anyone noticed the growing popularity of TV Programs about Real People Doing Real Stuff? Programs about remodeling, homesteading, and house buying have put HGTV on the map, and cooking shows have blossomed from Julia Child's groundbreaking "French Chef" to an entire cable channel devoted to cooking, baking, restaurants, and BBQ. Some of these programs, like "Chopped" pit chefs against one another, forcing them to create tasty dishes out of inedible swill that they find in a basket. It's amazing what one can do with goat brains and kale!
By far, the most popular show of this type is on The History Channel, and it is called "Forged in Fire". Modern-day Blacksmiths, Farriers, Sword-Makers, and Metalworkers compete in making iconic weapons from history. We get to see them sweating, hammering, quenching, and forging ancient weapons and then their weapons are rigorously tested.
3. The Nightmare Labyrinth of Tech Support As you may remember, my Vintage Legacy Computer crashed a few days ago. It took all morning for me to rebuild my tabs and re-access all my accounts, and reformat this beloved daily thread...but I did it! I even managed to get the thread out before noon. However, there was ONE website, a credit card, that I could not access, even though I KNEW the user name and password were correct. So I called Tech Support. After what seemed like HOURS navigating the automated menus, I finally got a human from somewhere in India. She informed me that she was going to have to wipe my server clean and purge all my morning's work in order for me to have access to MY OWN account. After arguing the necessity of such a drastic action, I finally consented. She asked me what browser I was using. When I told her, she said "We don't support that browser. You need a different one." (There had never been an issue before!) I was really upset, and said I would get back to her and hung up.
Now, I have a laptop which is so unfriendly that I use it mainly for solitaire. I had purchased it to do multi-track recording, but none of the programs I loaded were satisfactory, and now it was running slow due to excess of junk. I opened it up and tried to un-install all the programs but it wouldn't let me. There seemed to be a change in the operating system that prevented DYI fixes. So I brought it down to the place where I bought it. They kept the laptop overnight and removed the old programs, and charged me $50. When I got it back, I immediately used it to access my credit card. NO DICE. So I called Tech Support again and THIS time, a nice gentleman in India told me that the problem was on THEIR end, and he couldn't even tell me how much I owed. "Call back tomorrow," he said.
The next day I attempted to access my account on both the Vintage Legacy AND the Laptop, to no avail. So I called Tech Support AGAIN and this time got a very nice lady in India who walked me through a complex process of changing my password. Then I got in, on both the Laptop and the Vintage Legacy Desktop. So now I am all set. Oh...and I rescinded the "paperless" nonsense. If I had not gone "paperless" and got regular bills in the mail, this never would have happened.
Now, how are these stories related to today's Scripture reading? In recent decades, as we have become more and more dependent upon smart-phones and social media, we have become less and less skilled at problem solving and craftsmanship. If I remark"Brrrr...it's COLD today," everyone around me whips out their smart phone to see what it says the temperature is! Our furniture, appliances, and even the nuts and bolts holding our airplanes together are made in China, and all our Tech Support is from call centers in India.
But, there is something inside of us all that LONGS to CREATE, to cook, to redecorate, to build, and to tinker. And so, the most popular shows on TV are "Fixer-Upper", "Chopped", "Forged in Fire", and even "Jeopardy!". Humans were made to create, as we were made in the image of our Creator. And, as Ancient Israel found out the hard way, when one lets others do it all for them, one loses the skill to do it and are left vulnerable.

Considering the current situation in our United States, I found this:
Deuteronomy 17:14 When you enter the land which the Lord your God is giving you, and you take possession of it and live there, and you say, I will set a king over me like all the nations who are around me, 15 you shall most certainly set a king over you whom the Lord your God chooses. You shall set a king over you from among your countrymen (brothers); you may not choose a foreigner [to rule] over you who is not your countryman. 16 Further, he shall not [f]acquire many [war] horses for himself, nor make the people return to Egypt in order to acquire horses [to expand his military power], since the Lord said to you, You shall never return that way again. 17 He shall not acquire multiple wives for himself, or else his heart will turn away [from God]; nor [for the same reason] shall he acquire great amounts of silver and gold.
18 Now it shall come about when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. 19 And it shall be with him and he shall read it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear [and worship] the Lord his God [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect], by carefully obeying (keeping foremost in his thoughts and actively doing) all the words of this law and these statutes, 20 so that his heart will not be lifted up above his countrymen [by a false sense of self-importance and self-reliance] and that he will not turn away (deviate) from the commandment, to the right or to the left, so that he and his sons may continue [to reign] for a long time in his kingdom in Israel.
