The most senior figure in the Roman Catholic church in France was convicted yesterday of failing to report alleged child sexual abuse by a priest and given a six-month suspended sentence.
Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, Archbishop of Lyons, said that he would offer his resignation to the Pope after a surprise verdict that was hailed as a turning point by campaigners.
The court in Lyons ruled that between mid-2014 and mid-2015, the archbishop, 58, covered up allegations that Bernard Preynat, a priest in the diocese, had abused boy scouts. The alleged acts took place in the 1980s and early 1990s. Father Preynat is to stand trial this year.
