Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem






(Old Testament)

1 Samuel 11





Saul Rescues the City of Jabesh

11 Nahash[a] the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh Gilead. And all the men of Jabesh said to him, “Make a treaty with us, and we will be subject to you.”

2 But Nahash the Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you only on the condition that I gouge out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace on all Israel.”

3 The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days so we can send messengers throughout Israel; if no one comes to rescue us, we will surrender to you.”

4 When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and reported these terms to the people, they all wept aloud. 5 Just then Saul was returning from the fields, behind his oxen, and he asked, “What is wrong with everyone? Why are they weeping?” Then they repeated to him what the men of Jabesh had said.

6 When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he burned with anger. 7 He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel, proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not follow Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out together as one. 8 When Saul mustered them at Bezek, the men of Israel numbered three hundred thousand and those of Judah thirty thousand.

9 They told the messengers who had come, “Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘By the time the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be rescued.’” When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated. 10 They said to the Ammonites, “Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us whatever you like.”

11 The next day Saul separated his men into three divisions; during the last watch of the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

It doesn't take long for Saul to change into a Leader.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem






Today's Reading has inspired three little parables of my own. They are based upon real events, but are by no means a historical record. They are, in fact, little stories that relate to this episode in the History of Israel, and show us that times don't change much.

1. The Two Kings in the Kingdom of Ice Two Mighty Kings who had been enemies for forty years came to the realization that their enmity could destroy the world. So they met in the Kingdom of Ice, which was neutral, to discuss the terms of peace. The whole world held its breath as the two powerful kings who represented two entirely different philosophies, met. The King of the East demanded that the King of the West stop all plans for a new form of self-defense. The King of the West refused, and walked out. The whole world was aghast and demanded that the King of the West explain his refusal to negotiate. His answer was :

"If you are not willing to walk away from the negotiating table, then you have already LOST"

2. The Conference Under the Rising Sun At one time, the entire earth seemed to be in danger. A large group of scientists were predicting dire consequences if the Nations of the World didn't DO SOMETHING. So they sent all their delegates to the Land of The Rising Sun to discuss what to do. Nearly all the pollution was coming from either very poor countries, or countries that did not have freedom. But they decided to blame the richest and most free nation on the planet to foot the bill, at great expense and suffering to that nation's people. The King of the rich country walked out, and the rest of the world has never forgiven him for it. They still talk about it, even though there have been a number of Kings since then. Meanwhile, the other nations keep polluting, and expect the rich nation to pay for it.

3. The 70-Year War A War that claimed many lives was never really ended. For many years the Kings of two countries railed at each other, kidnapped citizens, spied on each other, captured ships, etc, while one Kingdom prospered and the other sank deeper and deeper into famine, isolation, and oppression. For many years, the kings of the poorer nation spent everything on building a "Doomsday Weapon", at the expense of the country's citizens. Finally, a new King arose in the Prosperous Nation who saw that the poorer country was on the verge of this goal. He made elaborate plans to meet with the difficult and capricious King of the other nation to sort things out.

After many elaborate preparations, the two kings met, but it was a short meeting. The King of the prosperous nation cut it short because the poor king would not give up his "Doomsday Weapon". When questioned about it, the New King just indicated that, if that wasn't going to happen, than there was nothing more to discuss at this meeting. And so, he walked out, just like the time in the Kingdom of the Ice.

Now...let's look at today's Chapter again. Israel offered a treaty with Nahash the Ammonite. Nahash replied with the most heinous terms imaginable. The people put up a great cry, but didn't "walk away" from this "negotiating table".

However, when King Saul hears about it, he girds his loins and totally conquers the Ammonites. The Scripture indicates that The Spirit of God was upon him when he made this risky and difficult decision.

History is replete with world leaders who sacrifice their own people for the sake of "peace" by the ignoble political practice called APPEASEMENT. Their names go down into History with contempt. Names like Chamberlain, Quisling, Vichy, etc have taken on new meanings in our own language because of the actions of the people associated with them.

Anyway, that's what Today's Passage said to me.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

_ HEN Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

And Nahash the Ammonite answered them,
On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.
And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.

Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
