LENT Thread. March 6 to April 18, 2019.

When Does Lent Start and End This Year?

For the Catholic faith Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6, 2019; if you are following the 40 days tradition, Lent ends on Holy Saturday, April 20, 2019.

Note: For the Orthodox Christian, (my faith) Lent begins on March 11 and ends on April 28, but I'm going to start on March 6 and end it on Greek Easter.

The Lenten Timeline

The beginning of Lent is marked by many with ashes hence the name Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, and Ash Wednesday is always 46 days before Easter Sunday, which is Sunday, April 21 this year.

The observance of Lent spans 40 days, ending on the Saturday before Easter. You may be wondering how Lent can be 40 days if Ash Wednesday is 46 days before Easter? That is because the Lenten fast does not include Sundays, which are considered feast days (a celebration of the resurrection)—so the six Sundays before Easter are omitted from the 40-day observance of fasting.

The last week of Lent is called Holy Week and includes Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday (technically not a fasting day), Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday, Good Friday or Holy Friday, and Holy Saturday or Black Saturday.

Lent is observed in a more solemn way from Advent, preparing for and reflecting on Jesus’ sacrificial death. But at the end of Lent is Easter Sunday, and that is the most joyous celebration because our Savior Jesus Christ was resurrected and lives on. Because of his death and resurrection, we are offered new life to live as covenant children in the kingdom of God forever

I think I did the same thing one year, before Trump. I didn’t watch Fox...nothing. Just TCM. It was great. Didn’t miss a thing.

Thank you for starting this thread!
I am planning to begin with a 3 day fast. I like to do a daily devotional from my Bible app. They have many to choose from. Also I will be praying for fellow Freepers as we begin a journey to the cross and resurrection of our Lord Jesus.

Always trying to eat healthier foods. But a few years ago realized it was the addition of actions in my life that was needed to have a more diciplined life. More exercise. More reading. More kindness. Etc.

It seems many here are masochists who LOVE to post and/or get upset about terrible things that are said about our president or weak conjecture articles on him being impeached/imprisoned.

I am guessing more people read the article here than viewers outside of this site :)

I think I will too. I watch, actually I tape then watch, Laura Ingraham, but she too is getting tiresome with the same bunch of lefties on there, who are on there purely to give the opposing view, no matter what the topic is.

I’ll watch Lou Dobbs too. He’s the best.

I agree. They’ll look at a headline then post it. I doubt if they’ll even read the article.

Just glance at the side bar...the majority of stuff is click bait.

It's just my opinion, and I love those folks on the Trump Train thread, but for what it's worth, many of the best links get posted to the Trump Train thread and never see the light of day on the sidebar or the front Forum page.

Many, many freepers who work and don't have time for a deep dive every day miss out on stuff that should be headlined at a glance on the Forum page.

Love the Train thread, but wish the main reporters over there would also post many of their terrific resarch and links to the Forum.

OTOH, I’ve posted stuff that I think is timely and worthwhile, and it gets booted off like fast. I can understand it if there are a lot of articles, but the side bar has items that have been on there for several days now.

My Lent thread was on there probably 3 minutes before it got taken off.

Thanks for the thread. Lent is a wonderful reflection time. More silence, less indulgence. I always give up something sometimes a few things. A few Lents I actually gave up Free Republic. It was hard at first but all I have to do is think of how much Christ suffered for us. Also good for giving up bad habits. I am giving up coffee. I actually started a few days ago. It is hard, I only drink one cup in the morning and it is weak too. We live a pretty simple life. As I age it seems there is less to give up each year. Wishing you all a fruitful Lent.

I’m a physician. I actually did a talk on the benefits of coffee. It really is very very very beneficial for you, esp if you’re a female. Several studies now showing that coffee reduces dementia, recurrence of breast CA, reduced incidence of colon and ovarian cancers.

I would NOT stop your coffee.

Here are some other cool things about coffee. It doesn’t matter if you drink de-caf or caffeinated. The benefit is the same.

Also, 3 to 5 cups gives you the ultimate benefit, a cup being 6 oz.

Studies compared coffee with tea, chocolate and other drinks that have caffeine.

It’s NOT the caffeine.

Oh, black coffee was slightly more beneficial that with cream and sugar.

Pick something else. NOT coffee.

That is interesting info thanks. I could not drink more than 1 cup. My stomach reacts badly to the acid. I drink a cup of the least acidic I can find. Don’t eat fast food or snacks much, not into candy even and only occasionally have a soft drink but I have given those up pretty much for good. When it comes to the food aspect, I look for something that I can deny myself and will not be easy. I am running out of things. We are Catholic, so we do the no meat on Fridays and fast (and abstain) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 40 days without coffee can’t hurt me much physically. I have been alternating one day sencha green tea and the next black chai tea. Really miss the coffee already. Hubby makes his own every morning, even grinds the beans. The smell is amazing, he has his own blend of 5 different beans. But it is so strong and acidic I can’t drink it. Have tried taking 1/3 cup and adding 2/3 cup water and it still sours my stomach. Appreciate the advice. I think I just need to stick with the coffee. Having to smell his coffee while skipping mine is going to be tough!

I’m into roasting my beans. It’s fun and easy, AND the green beans do not go bad for months whereas the roasted bean and ground coffee go stale within days.

Americans are drinking stale coffee and they don’t know it.

If you’re drinking the coffee within days of it being ground you’re ok...and a week or two from opening the beans you’re ok too.

I love these Alka Selzer Gel Caps. I’ll pop one now and then for that heart burn you get in the morning with coffee. You might want to try one BEFORE you drink.

Coffee reduces prostate and colon cancer in men alone with dementia and some other things.

That is good news for hubby. I drink a grocery store house blend, made in a stainless steel percolator, just one cup. My foster daughter says it just brown water. I’ve been happy with it.
