A security guard said they had to lock the door to the shrine in the middle of the Saturday Vigil Mass
While chanting and playing ceremonial drums, a group of Native American rights activists reportedly led by Nathan Phillips attempted on January 19 to enter Washington, DCs Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception during a Saturday evening Mass.
The group of 20 demonstrators was stopped by shrine security as it tried to enter the church during its 5:15 pm Vigil Mass, according to a shrine security guard on duty during the Mass.
It was really upsetting, the guard told CNA.
There were about twenty people trying to get in, we had to lock the doors and everything.
The guard said the incident was a disappointment during a busy and joyful weekend for the shrine.
We had hundreds and hundreds of people from all over the country come here to celebrate life, to celebrate each other together. That a protest tried to come inside during Mass was really the worst.
The guard told CNA the situation was tense.
Im just really grateful that nothing too bad happened, they were really angry.
A source close to the shrines leadership corroborated the security guards account, telling CNA that during the Mass, Phillips and the group tried to enter the church while playing drums and chanting, and were prohibited from entering the building by security personnel, who locked the main basilica doors with the congregation still inside.

The dude has something against Catholics. I’m stunned that CNN isn’t investigating.
Who is paying his expenses?
He walked up to Mr. Sandmann, got in his face, banged his tom-tom in the hope Mr. Sandmann would react; hopefully in a violent manner.
Mr. Sandmann had the presence of mind to realize something wasn't right and he knew not to react and escalate this potential conflict (other than to "smirk" which then became the offense).
Once Mr. Sandmann accessed the situation he remained calm and didn't take the bait.
Mr. Sandmann didn't do what Mr. Phillips wanted him to do; take a swing.
Mr. Sandmann is our Gandhi or blacks sitting at a lunch counter during segregation.
It was Mr. Sandmann, not Mr. Phillips, who de-escalated this manufactured conflict.
The reaction from the LSM would be very different if someone did this at a mosque. d;^)
No, he is just in the employ of some Soros front that is trying to develop a strategy to effectively disrupt the annual anti-Roe-Wade March for Life. Expect more nut groups such a Lotabull's and the Real True Black Jewish Hebrews to appear to try and provoke a major incident with the pro-life paraders.
LMAO!!!
