Gonzaga University Blocks Ben Shapiro Speech, Citing ‘Jesuit’ Values

SPOKANE, Washington, November 30, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Gonzaga University has blocked a proposed speaking engagement for Ben Shapiro, saying it would be “contrary” to the school’s “Catholic/Jesuit mission and values.”

Gonzaga Vice President of Student Development Judi Biggs Garbuio declined the College Republicans chapter’s request to book Shapiro to speak at the university, Campus Reform reports, citing in addition to the school’s “Catholic/Jesuit mission,” human dignity, solidarity with vulnerable people, and safety concerns, given the sort of protests that might accompany an appearance by the conservative, pro-life Jewish commentator.

“Mr. Shapiro’s appearances routinely draw protests that include extremely divisive and hateful speech and behavior, which is offensive to many people, regardless of their age, politics or beliefs,” Biggs Garbuio said, appearing to accidentally acknowledge the intolerance of campus left-wing protestors, who have at other schools rioted and stormed buildings in response to speakers with whom they disagreed.

Gonzaga University is committed to the human dignity of every individual,” she said. “This is the core of our mission based on the teachings of Christ Jesus, and the foundations of the Society of Jesus. We stand in solidarity with vulnerable members of our community who may be targeted for discrimination, ridicule, or harassment by others.”

The Pope now says he is concerned about the catastrophic effect that the homosexual clergy is having on the Church. He is encouraging homosexuals to leave the clergy. If he is serious he will start by disbanding the Jesuit order. Doubt he ever will.

The pope is a Jesuit. He is not going to disband them.

Pat Buchanan echoed a statement of Bishop Fulton Sheen, who made a similar observation about Catholic colleges back in the 1970s.

Its funny or just plain sad, that universities have a standard of free speech, “an alternate view”, when it comes to liberals. But when it comes to conservatives, the standard is, if everything they say is not perfect, they can’t say it.

I am sure that the administration would not agree with most college speakers on every topic. I don’t know who has spoke at Gonzaga, but I am sure that Ben’s moral code is closer to the ethics of the Catechism than most speakers on college campus’s.

That WAS Jesuit thinking many, many moons and many galaxies
away. They were the ones to go to for clarification of controversial issues. No more.

Hard to believe what has become of the Crème de la crème of Catholic philosophy.

Today they are disgraced, just as the current pope.

As a Catholic I demand a recount.

I remember watching Bishop Sheen on tv as a child. He used to whip that cape around. Quite mesmerizing. Excellent speaker.

My husband is proud of his Jesuit education and it helped make him the good man that he is. It’s the radicals at BC, Georgetown Gonzaga on the east and west coast. There are still jesuit colleges in middle America where he attended college who follow their faith.

I stopped paying attention to the pope a long time ago. He started off well then went downhill quickly.

1968 Gov Nelson Rockefeller used Bundy Report to offer tax dollars to private colleges in NYS. Hitch was had to be nondenominational. At the time 20 catholic colleges in the state. Fordham first to apply and became nondenominational. Maybe 2 or 3 left in NYS. Sad.

No fan of Ben Shapiro here (can't stand the guy...) however the school's reasoning is to prevent Shapiro from speaking because the behavior of the protesters?

Gee, talk about not holding people accountable for their actions!

I am so happy to learn that sanity exists somewhere near to fight the insanity on the coasts.

I remember the nuns teaching me and when they mentioned “Jesuits” it was hushed and so reverent, because they were so respected.

As long as there are still some who remain worthy of that respect I think we will be OK.

Have a Merry Christmas, parent, along with your family.

"We stand in solidarity with vulnerable members of our community who may be targeted for discrimination, ridicule, or harassment by others.”

And they demonstrate these values by discriminating and ridiculing Ben Shapiro?

“solidarity with vulnerable people,”
WTF does that even mean? How on God’s green earth does it apply? To anything?

How can a catholic college become nondenominational? Doesn’t it have a “governing board?” Being open to non-Catholics is fine and proper, abandoning its Catholic identity is NOT. Imho

Change mission statement. Lay board. Remove religious statues on classrooms. Declare yourself non denominational. Get govt money.
