He removed the sanctions placed on child rapist McCarrick by the previous Pope; does that clarify things?

That's to sow confusion.

It was from the very beginning of his "reign". He'd say or issue a confusing statement, and the LSM would spin it pro-liberal, anti-traditional.

The Vatican would not issue clarifications or corrections, unless it found some outlet praising a pro-traditionalist aspect.
