The only thing Quayle firmed up was the impression that the presidential years of 1988-1992 were confused and largely inept.

My observation of the Bush 41 presidency was that he was naive about the lengths to which his domestic enemies would go to destroy him. In a spirit of collegiality, he moved his lips and signed the tax increase which was passed by the Democrat congress. IMO, this was designed by the Democrats deliberately to destroy him. It worked.

He was blamed for this, and he lost the election. The result was the country and the Democrat party being stuck with the Clintons to this day.

He was an establishment liberal republican. Violated tax pledge “read my lips” and instituted inport ban on semi auto rifles and ammunition are the things I remember the most about him. A Democrat would have been worse, a lot worse no doubt, but that doesn’t make him a conservative hero.

I look at that particular thing differently. I think GHWB had a very good sense of how simple and pathetic most American voters were ... and that silly sh!t played well with them.

Thank you for a very well done summary of how history reviews our past leaders and heroes. I, for one, am very tired of the "not conservative enough for my vote" posters who sit out every election then complain because we get someone like sinema in the senate.

GW Bush was an american hero on many levels and he deserve his due.

All the accolades they are giving to senior Bush... why do this after a person is gone?

I recently stopped by my library and got the audible book by Newt on “Understanding Trump”. Something to listen to on my drive. If you have not read that book, there are parts of it that should be common knowledge.

Newt has known Trump longer than just being President. He goes into who Trump is and why. From Newt’s writings, Trump is in the genius category. That information should be out there for those who call him names and don’t have a clue as to who he is.

His many talents ... Trump brags about what he does.. the media won’t so he does. But he does not go into how smart he really is. I’ve heard him mention it, but since he’s always been this way, he probably does not see it as different or better than anyone else.

One thing mentioned in the book...Newt has seen Trump carry on a deep conversation with one person and Conway is giving him detailed information in the other ear. He hears both and goes over it in his memory/mind and acts on it. He goes on little sleep and can maneuver many things at once, not missng a beat on any of it.

He wants things done under budget and on time or earlier than. He values the dollar...Yes, he is rich, but he lives like the rest of us in his mind. He talks to the ‘little people’ (my words) who are workng for him.. building for him... and does really like people...and wants to help America become what he desires for all of us.

And he hits hard at those who attack him.

There is so much more.. 300 plus pages..... compared to those who spew hate at him.... they don’t hold a candle to the man, DJT.

George the senior chose to leave Sadam in charge. Personally, I was in Kuwait with a bunch of Marines looking to get some. We we’re disappointed when Senior told us to stand down. In retrospect, he was right, we didn’t want to own Iraq.

The so-called budget reductions were in the out years. Bush and his Democrat buddies knew they would NEVER come to pass. The tax increase was immediate. The whole thing was a scam on the American people knowingly entered into by Bush and not surprisingly gobbled up by the dim witted electorate. It still got Bush tossed and the evil Clinton elected, but The Bushs and the Clintons had far more in common than the had disagreements over. New world order etc.

The chaos in Iraq and the formation of ISIS was a direct result of pulling out and the Dems’ recklessness. ISIS was foreseeable just by looking at what happened to Afghanistan after it was left in a vacuum.

We've had a continuous presence in the Middle East since August 1990, when the the first US troops arrived as part of Operation Desert Shield.

ISIS grew from Al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). AIQ expanded after George W. Bush relieved the Iraqi Army of most Sunni Muslims, perhaps the dumbest move during the occupation.

“Bush won a major war for the first time since Vietnam. “

He did? As I understand it he left the field of battle when he could have won it, and it took his son GW to finally win that war 12 years later, after a re-invasion and 12 more years of the Mullahs in Tehran burrowing deeper into the Shia of Iraq.

I’ll give him Clarence Thomas but not much else.

What major war was that? The Gulf War?

Are you aware what that was all about?

The reason Iraq invaded Kuwait was because Kuwait had been slant drilling into Iraq’s oil fields and stealing their oil.

Irag determined that Kuwait owed them about $11 Billion dollars and they would not pay so Iraq invades.

That set Bush off because Saddam had thoughts of moving southward and invading Saudi Arabia. Now in light of what we know would that have been a bad thing?

The whole Gulf war set in motion all the turmoil we now have in the ME. It was a war we should not have fought. It was a joke.

Actually, Iraq invaded Kuwait because he was a maniacal genocidal supremacists who wanted to take over as much of the world as he possibly good.

It was not nearly as benign and beautiful as you suggest.

I am so glad he is now dead and suffered a devastating defeat multiple times to the World’s greatest military:

The United States Armed Forces.

SO NOT sorry for your loss of an SOB known as Saddam Hussein.

Someday you will cheer for the home team— trust me on this one.

Yeah, that's the ticket. And the main reason Hitler invaded Poland was because the Polish attacked a German radio station just over the border.

That should indeed be more widely spread. Pres. Trump is the man for today and the only one who understands the nature of the fight. If Republicans hadn’t sat back and allowed themselves to be pilloried 10 years ago, we’d all be better off.

That said, and I’ve got to admit that in a primary election I don’t see myself singing the praises of anyone who doesn’t recognize who the Dems have become, this isn’t a primary election. There’s still plenty of good that was done by a former president during a better time - as well as many mistakes - but now’s the Time to mention those merits. Honestly, if all the man did was save the country from Dukakis-Bentsen-Jackson (and I don’t mean Andrew), that itself would be worthy of our thanks.

You can see that I praised President Trump in toward the end of the piece, although I made a number of mistakes in that paragraph out of tiredness.

The Home team has made way too may tactical and strategical mistakes and both Gulf Wars are prime examples. Those two wars and the mistakes by Obama disrupted the whole area.

Maybe if we had left it alone if might have been different.

Keep in mind Saddam was our Bad Boy at one time, and it was Bush’s Girl In Iraq at the time, April Glaspie that gave Saddam a wink and a nod he could do what he wanted and then all of sudden it wasn’t okay and we go to war for exactly what?

See if you can tell me why??????????
