Acts 8

Philip in Samaria

4 Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city.

Since the Book of Acts is very short, if we bombed through it a Chapter at a time, we could finish in less than four weeks. But, it is more interesting if we take it one morsel at a time, guided by the little paragraph headings, which are NOT part of the original text. That way we can get so much more out of it.

Our Father Who Art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Your Name!
It Is A Good Thing to Praise You,
To Lift Up Your Holy Name in Worship,

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Cross and The Switchblade was a book written in 1962 about Pastor David Wilkerson's work among the youth gangs of New York City. People became aware of these gangs due to the Broadway Musical West Side Story which premiered on Broadway in 1957. (Ironically, the neighborhood in "West Side Story" was cleared away in the 60's to make way for Lincoln Center, where the music from the play is performed regularly! So, the REAL gangs were displaced by the music about THEM!)

When I was about 13, I desperately wanted to audition for a local production of "West Side Story", but my parents did not want me to be in a production that was about street gangs.

So, in the early 60's, the Youth Gangs of New York were the "Samaritans" of the era. Most people wanted nothing to do with them, and the idea of a getting them to go to church was not a popular one.

In more recent years, I was involved with a ministry to Bikers. Some of these were patch-wearing "One-Percenters", and were a tough crowd. They were "The Samaritans" of the era. Although I tailored the music to the prevailing tastes (Rock and Blues) we kept the Gospel Message intact. There were quite a few people in religious authority who disapproved of the ministry, but it was what it was. And some people got saved, and that's all that mattered.

In this brief passage of the Book of Acts, we see Philip traveling to the Samaritans to preach the Gospel. This was a despised group, and many would find reason to criticize Philip for doing this. Nevertheless, quite a few heard the message and got saved. Praise The Lord.
