The Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore will issue identity cards to undocumented immigrants and other vulnerable people that the Baltimore Police Department has agreed to recognize a program activists hope will make people more willing to cooperate with law enforcement.
Mayor Catherine Pugh and Archbishop William E. Lori joined church and community leaders Wednesday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Canton, which is home to a large immigrant congregation and will run a pilot of the card system.
Pugh said that if the card gives even one person the confidence to report a crime, it will be a success.
No one should become a victim and be afraid to call the police, Pugh said.
The program is the citys latest effort to aid immigrants, whom city leaders see having a significant role boosting the health of some neighborhoods.
The Police Department plays only a minimal role in enforcing immigration laws which are a federal matter and in March the city approved $200,000 in funding for lawyers to represent people facing deportation.
Advocates for immigrant communities say people without legal status in the United States are reluctant to come forward as victims or witnesses of crime. They say helping immigrants get an identity card from a trusted institution the Catholic Church will make people more comfortable talking to officers.

I NEVER give to Catholic Charities...EVER!!
The Catholic church is not an arm of the US government and I don’t get where they have any authority to issue ID cards.
Damn, sometimes I show my Costco card as ID. It has my photo on the back so I figure WTH.
I read you!
Double NO. I’m not catholic and my office is a black away from that travesty of a supposed church, Sick, anti-American and stupid.
Youve got some issues, Ill agree, but their not with the Catholic Church. Theyre in your head.
You clearly have a very confused understanding of the Catholic Church and Protestantism; as well as a gross misconception about the Catholic heresy of Americanism. I sense that spending much time informing you would be a waste of energy and time on my part and probably yours, since you seem to believe what you believe and thats that!
The popes and bishops who have led the Catholic Church following Vatican II (1962-65) are quite different than the Catholics you have been taught to despise. The Vatican II popes and bishops reject the notion that Martin Luther was a heretic and warmly embrace him today. There are suggestions that the current pope will raise him to sainthood. In short, theyre trying to be in your corner whether you know it or like it or not. That is what their heresy of “ecumenism” is all about.
And as for what you refer to as the heresy of America, it is actually the heresy of Americanism. And not that you might particularly care, but Vatican II also embraced the teachings that gave rise to that heresyessentially denying the traditional Catholic teaching on Religious Liberty. In essence, they agreed with the Protestants that anyone has a right from God to practice any religion they may wish, or none at all. It has nothing to do with the pope being in control of anyone.
By the way, I am a traditional Catholic. The true Catholics you Protestants actually despise. Im one of those Catholics who actually still believes that Martin Luther was heretic, and that error (all religions other than the Catholic religion) has no rights. You and others may not like that, but on that point I suggest you take it up with God.
Finally, if you are opposed to what the Catholic bishop is doing in Baltimore with the ID cards, we are complete agreement. These men have abandoned the true mission of the Catholic Church. They ignore sin and promote the Socialistic redistribution of wealth, support the globalist media in their quest for one-worldism, bow to the altar of the radical environmentalists, and in their spare time either sexually abuse young boys, or covering up their sinful behavior.
So whatever issues you may have with those men and with the religion they are pushing, have at it. But please, at least be accurate in where you throw your hand grenades.
The company I work for does a large fundraiser civic event with Baltimore Catholic Charities as the recipient.
A past boss probably hired me thinking I’d join the team. The second I found out who it was for...Nope.
Is this effectively an Establishment of Religion issue?
“Baltimore police to recognize Catholic Church-issued ID cards for immigrants”
What could possibly go wrong?
“Pugh said that if the card gives even one person the confidence to report a crime, it will be a success.”
They gonna tell on themselves?
The catholic church just moved over the line, time to tax them as any other business!
Just deport them.
Will they also take Monopoly money for fines and tickets?
Doesn’t this contradict the Dems constant mantra of “separation of Church and State”???
Sigh.....
