Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Gospel of John

(New Testament)

John 11

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin.

“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”

49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”

51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one. 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.

54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.

55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

Footnotes:

1. John 11:16 Thomas (Aramaic) and Didymus (Greek) both mean twin.
2. John 11:18 Or about 3 kilometers

(End of Scripture Passage)

Sometimes things happen that can not be explained away. The Raising of Lazarus from the dead is one of those times. In the face of such an undeniable Miracle, there should only be one reaction…BELIEF. But, as we see here, an extreme miracle requires an extreme measure from those who refuse to believe.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Many of Jesus' miracles were private and personal, and included a caution to keep them that way. Others occurred in public, in the face of huge crowds, and witnessed by the religious authorities. The Raising of Lazarus was the latter. There was no way to get around this miracle. And so, those who should have known better were in a very difficult situation.

Do they drop everything, including jobs, political power, and position in society to follow Jesus? There is some indication in Scripture that at least two did exactly that.

Do they ignore Jesus and just hope he'll fade away? The great scholar Gamaliel later advised this in Acts Chapter 5.

The third option is the one that is depicted here in the 11th Chapter of the Gospel of John. This is when the opposition starts actively plotting to kill Jesus.

The plotters have seen miracles occur before their very eyes. Their arguments and debates with Jesus have all been debunked, usually with a parable, a demonstration of Divine Power, or even a humorous rebuke. Their questions were countered with more questions, and their arguments rang hollow in the face of irrefutable wisdom. Their reaction seems crazy to us.

We see similar craziness in our world today!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"The counsel of the LORD stands forever, The plans of His heart from generation to generation. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance..” Psalm 33 NASB

It's always struck me that the Romans are such shadowy figures in the Gospels; in the background, only to be called upon for some serious break in their social order. The fact that Israel was occupied by these barbaric hordes is of even lightly secondary consideration to the squabbles twixt the Pharisees and Saduccees and sometimes more minor sects with Judaism.

Pilate sees no wrong in Jesus, yet the Jewish crowds demand his death and Barabbas' release as if they were in charge, and so Pilate relents, even washing his hands of the affair, and, once again, the Romans end up doing the dirty work.

...Not a criticism so much as an interesting observation that seems rather odd to me.

שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְהוָה אֶחָֽד׃

"Sh'ma Yisrael…."

Indeed...the Romans during that time were enigmatic to say the least. Although the Religious Leaders plotted to kill Jesus, they still needed the Romans to execute Him. They seemed to be in fear of losing their position, yet were able to manipulate the Romans to do their dirty work.

This uneasy alliance can be seen as a forerunner of some of the “strange bedfellows” we see even today:

Women’s Rights Organizations aligned with Muslims
Peace Advocates aligned with Terrorists
“Free Love” People aligned with the #MeToo movement
Abortion Proponents aligned with those who oppose Capital Punishment

And so on.

((((I’ll bet all of you can come up with more!)))

Jesus wounded the leaders’ pride. And wounded pride is at terrible thing when unchecked. As we see from the get-go. Cain killed Abel.

Joining in prayer, left that other site, for the Peace of Jerusalem and for revival in our beloved America as well as Israel.
