A Future Pope Needs to Institute a Seminary for Bishops
Freep | 9/10/18 | CharlesOconnell

In good times and bad, Popes have never been free to appoint their Bishops. Prior to the 20th century, they had to accommodate secular rulers in the bishoprics' countries. Now they have to accommodate various internal institutional special interests.

A Pope should open a special Seminary for Bishops. They should not accept anyone who is angling for admission. The Pope should have agents out throughout the world looking, not only for devout believers, but for men who demonstrate the fortitude to stand up to the incredibly crushing pressure Bishops have to bear.

In other words, the Pope needs to keep any potential Bishops very close to him, virtually living with him for years, to closely observe them and weed out any unqualified candidates.

How are bishops chosen now? Do they work their way up in the church bureaucracy? Are they appointed by a Pope?

Whats the difference between a bishop and an archbishop?

And how do some bishops or archbishops get designated as cardinals in the church?

Is there a systematic problem with how people are recruited and promoted in the church?

“Sorry, this is the last Pope you get before Jesus Christ comes back.”

Matthew 25:13
Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

No one is saying anything about knowing days and hours.

We do know that we are almost a year into Revelation Chapter 12. We know that the Fig Tree is back in the Land and budding. We know that Damascus is almost a ruinous heap. We know that the Ezekiel 38 consortium of nations is almost complete. Socially, it sure seems like the days of Noah and days of Lot. By almost anyone’s count, it has been about 6000 years since Adam and Eve. A couple of more months, and President Trump will have everyone saying “peace and security”. Given the number of Bible verses and conde s that fit him, President Trump could very well be “the Trump of God”.

Do you think that this alignment of events can last much longer?

Sorry, this is the last Pope you get before Jesus Christ comes back.

Either Jesus is coming soon or Francis is going to live to 4000.

How are bishops chosen now?

The procedure, as I understand it, in the Western church (IOW, the Latin Rite, not the Byzantine Rite churches) is supposed to be:

  1. Bishops are encouraged to collect information on priests they think would make good bishops
  2. They then forward those names, CVs, etc., to the Papal Nuncio in Washington
  3. When a vacancy occurs, the Papal Nuncio prepares a list of three candidates, called a terna, and submits it to the Congregation of Bishops in Rome.
  4. The Congregation does their own investigation (allegedly this includes soliciting -- under strict secrecy -- the opinions of laypeople who know the man being considered), and then selects a candidate from the list and submits his name to the Pope.
  5. The Pope can approve the nomination, or request another name, causing the process to continue, etc.

Apparently PF has seen fit to circumvent this process in some cases.

Whats the difference between a bishop and an archbishop?

An archbishop is the bishop of a "metropolitan see," which has lesser dependent sees called "suffragans". A metropolitan see generally belongs to a major city where a lot of Catholics live ... St. Louis, Philadelphia, etc.

And how do some bishops or archbishops get designated as cardinals in the church?

The Pope appoints them. Some sees generally are expected to have their bishops raised to the rank of Cardinal, e.g., it was considered odd and irregular when PF did not name Chaput of Philly a cardinal but did name Bad Tobin of Newark one. Newark has not traditionally been a cardinalatial see, while Philly has been.

Is there a systematic problem with how people are recruited and promoted in the church?

Before we go there, I think we need to address the issue that PF is apparently circumventing the system put in place and developed over centuries, in order to put his allies in positions of power, especially in the College of Cardinals.
