Jesus’ Claims About Himself

48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”

49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”

52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”

54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”

57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”

58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

This Passage always fascinated me when I was a child. I had no idea that "I AM" was the Name that God identified Himself with when speaking to Moses during the Exodus.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Language is a very subtle thing.Translating is very difficult, because to different groups of people, the same word has different meanings. For example, let's take the simple English word "scale".

1. To a musician, "scale" means a succession of pitches that ascend or descend in a particular order. However, if the musician is from Europe or America, the scale is different from the scale for a musician in Africa, India, or China.

2. To a doctor or sports trainer, the scale is that awful thing you stand on that reveals your weight!

3. To a dentist, it is a procedure that scrapes plaque off your teeth causing great pain and expense...EEK!

4. To a mountain climber, it is what you do to a mountain!

5. To a snake or a fish, it's what makes up his skin.

6. To a person, it's what you DON'T want on your skin.

7. To a mathematician it means something else (don't ask...I was hoping there wouldn't be math involved LOL).

I think I have made my case. You will be tested on this, but I will scale the grades.

OK...enough silliness, but as you can see, what we say to people is received through that person's FILTER. We read a "tweet" and say "Right On!" while others are appalled by the same exact words. You know what I'm talking about.

The crowds surrounding Jesus consisted of many kinds of people. Jesus compares them in the Parable of the Sower. (Matthew 13:1-23, Mark 4:1-20, and Luke 8:4-15.) Everyone receives the same "seed" (the Word of God) but some reject it, fail to nurture it, or get distracted. Some are openly hostile and DELIBERATELY "misinterpret" it. And here we have today's story.

The various parties within the ruling council had many belief systems within Judaism. They were not monolithic, as many of us have been led to believe over the years. The Pharisees were meticulous about The Law, but they also believed in Spiritual matters such as the Day of Resurrection and Eternal Life. The Sadducees were more "pragmatic" as they adhered to a "Here and Now" philosophy that did not include Eternal Life. There were other parties as well, but these were the two big ones.

It would seem that the delegation sent to question Jesus in this instance were more like the Saduccees than Pharisees. When Jesus speaks of His pre-existence, and of His acquaintance with Abraham, the questioners bristle with rage. They can only think in terms of the "here and now". Eternal Life seems to be a nonsensical concept.

Then Jesus REALLY goes and does it. He makes a statement, using mixed tenses, "Before Abraham was, I AM." This can only mean one thing. There was never a time when He didn't exist, and will never be a time ever.
