VATICAN CITY, August 20, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) Nearly a week after last Tuesdays scathing Pennsylvania grand jury report exposing 70 years of clergy sex abuse of 1,000 known victims on the part of some 300 priests, Pope Francis responded to the scandal today, stating that clericalism was the root cause.
The letter is facing criticism from faithful Catholics for failing to specify any concrete actions he would take to address the crisis, and ignoring the underlying issue of rampant homosexuality in the clergy.
Clericalism, whether fostered by priests themselves or by lay persons, leads to an excision in the ecclesial body that supports and helps to perpetuate many of the evils that we are condemning today. To say no to abuse is to say an emphatic no to all forms of clericalism, he stated.
He called clericalism a peculiar way of understanding the Churchs authority that is common in many communities where sexual abuse and the abuse of power and conscience have occurred, and that not only nullifies the character of Christians, but also tends to diminish and undervalue the baptismal grace that the Holy Spirit has placed in the heart of our people.
In his letter to the People of God (published in full below), the Pope called for collective Church-wide penance, fasting, and prayer as a response.
He did not, however, acknowledge the issue of homosexuality among clergy, offer concrete steps for resolution of the crisis, nor recognize the role bishops have played in the scandal. In fact, the word "bishop" does not appear once in the entire letter.
Cardinal Raymond Burke stated in two interviews concerning the crisis that only the Pope can address situations of misconduct or negligence by bishops, not a bishops conference.
It is the Roman Pontiff, the Holy Father......

The Eastern Rites and Anglican Usage Rite allow for married priests.
The pope himself is unclean in all this and should not forget his nasty priests in Mexico.
>>Can someone tell me what clericalism is and how to aim my pistol at it if it gets near my kids?<<
Post of the day!! Good one.
Clericalism?
Is that his way of saying power makes people rapey?
The Vatican II church ....coming home to roost.
“Clericalism”....... where clergy see themselves as political power brokers. The Church projects an image of power and privilege, and the role of the laity is seen in a passive pray and obey manner.
Also ‘clericalism’ can refer to a clerical culture of secrecy in which misbehavior or illegal activities are tacitly encouraged or at least widespread to the point where any priest who would consider becoming a critic or whistle-blower risks self-destruction. Thus, exposure is a remote possibility.
The problem of clericalism is composed of several problems. It is the problem of ‘a caste that arrogates to itself undue authority’...that makes unwarranted claims to wisdom, even to having a monopoly on understanding the mind of God..... The consequence is the great weakening of the Church by denigrating or excluding the many gifts of the Spirit present in the people who are the Church. The problem of clericalism arises when the church acts in indifference, or even contempt, toward the people who are the Church.
So the Pope is passing the buck....
The Pope is distracting by using ‘Clericalism’ as what allows the laity and Priesthood within the church, to distract from, and cover up for, rampant criminal activity and child abuse.
As long as laypeople allow themselves to be manipulated no child will be safe in the confessional and bishops will continue to enable and protect the predator Priests. It’s really up to the laity to act...
Pope Francis is just repeating his worn out tune as he has all along....below in 2014....
Clericalism is one of the evils of the Church. ... Priests take pleasure in the temptation to clericalize the laity, but many of the laity are on their knees asking to be clericalized, because it is more comfortable!

Nonsense as usual.
