An Appeal to the Cardinals of the Catholic Church
First Things ^ | 8/15/18 | Various

Pope Francis has revised the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read, “the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person.” This statement has been understood by many, both inside and outside the Church, to teach that capital punishment is intrinsically immoral and thus is always illicit, even in principle.

Though no Catholic is obliged to support the use of the death penalty in practice (and not all of the undersigned do support its use), to teach that capital punishment is always and intrinsically evil would contradict Scripture. That the death penalty can be a legitimate means of securing retributive justice is affirmed in Genesis 9:6 and many other biblical texts, and the Church holds that Scripture cannot teach moral error. The legitimacy in principle of capital punishment is also the consistent teaching of the magisterium for two millennia. To contradict Scripture and tradition on this point would cast doubt on the credibility of the magisterium in general.

Concerned by this gravely scandalous situation, we wish to exercise the right affirmed by the Church’s Code of Canon Law, which at Canon 212 states:

The Christian faithful are free to make known to the pastors of the Church their needs, especially spiritual ones, and their desires. According to the knowledge, competence, and prestige which they possess, they have the right and even at times the duty to manifest to the sacred pastors their opinion on matters which pertain to the good of the Church and to make their opinion known to the rest of the Christian faithful, without prejudice to the integrity of faith and morals, with reverence toward their pastors, and attentive to common advantage and the dignity of persons.

We are guided also by the teaching of St. Thomas.........

please do something about all the pedophiles in the Church; something, that is, besides using the collection plate to pay victims to keep quiet.

Why would the Church want to limit its response to such a small part of the problem?

There aren’t many pedophiles. Most of the problem is ordinary, garden-variety homosexuals who infiltrated the seminaries against Church rules.

I've considered the two, the Catholic Church and the United States of America. Pope Obama and President Francis. Two anti pope, anti presidents working to ruin what they were entrusted with.

Pope Benedict XVI did do something about that. Have you NOT seen my long list of links from that era as he sent emissaries to each and every U. S. seminary to verify that that certain entrance rules were being followed.

No longer is any man with any inkling of homosexuality admitted to the seminary.

If you want the list I can post it.

Perhaps that will start to make a difference in a few hundred years. I know all about how the Vatican takes a "long view" of history, and how the Church is like a giant ship, that takes a long time to change direction.

Amen to that, Steely Tom.

But I think you might have posted this to the wrong thread. There's a bunch of threads elsewhere in the forum about the plague of aggressive homosexual abuse in the Church. (Most of it wasn't pedos. By still saying "pedos" they're closing their eyes--- or trying to close our eyes --- to the much bigger problem: 80% was homosexuals going after the young stuff. Male-on-male with post-adolescent, 13-17 yo minors.)

This thread is about the Death Penalty.

Pope Benedict laicized 400 priests just in one 2-year period to move them out quickly and expose them more easily to secular law enforcement.

He did that to do an end-run around long, canonical legal processes. Instant YOU'RE OUT.

Do that, and rid the seminaries of homosexuals (not just seminary students, but seminary teachers, rectors and other officials!) and you can root out most of the problem pretty expeditiously.

Pope Francis won;t do it. At least three Cardinals Francis himself appointed as his closest advisors, three of the so-called Council of Nine, are deeply implicated in massive cover-ups, and he knows it.

One way or another, Francis must go. It's OK to pray for someone else's "Happy Death." Repent, confess, die. It's what I'd want for myself.

I think the Catholic Church has bigger issues than the death penalty. Until the really and truly clean house and repent of the systemic and systematic wickedness throughout they have no moral standing to speak about anything else. Repentance in sack cloth and ashes is what is needed here. Until then the organization has no standing to speak on anything else. Period

I agree that the Church has to tear out the homosexual abuse problem, branch and root. It's a huge, filthy and horrendous network of evil, the eradication of which that has to be shoved way up the priorities list, and kept there til it's over. I'm sick of it. We're all sick of it. Sick of filthy lying perverts in high places.

But I disagree with your idea that the Church shouldn't be teaching or preaching about anything else.

The Church should be preaching the Gospel at all times.

2 Timothy 4:2
"Preach the word; be ready in season and out; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with every kind of patient instruction."

What's galling --- which you would know if you read the article --- is that what Pope Francis inserted into the Catechism about the Death Penalty is NOT Gospel. It's in contradiction to what's in the Bible and in contradiction to 2,000 years of Church teaching.

Pope Francis chooses now, of all all times, to teach AGAINST the Magisterium of the Church?

I can't tell you how disturbing that is. It's absolutely unprecedented. He's a relentless saboteur of Catholicism.

The solution to the pedo plague in the church is quite simple. Stop ordaining homosexuals. In fact, stop admitting them to seminaries. That will end the problem.

I’m well aware of the popes wrong teaching on the death penalty I just hold the opinion they have no authority to reach on any policy until they really address the sexual abuse problem I think it will take sincere people like you inside the RCC to rise up and demand accountability or vote with your feet I wish you luck

Yes the gospel should be preached at all times and Gods word is immeasurably powerful to achieve all He ordains, but I’m afraid even the preaching of the Gospel is tainted by the overwhelming evil in the organization. The nonChristian will take any teaching less seriously when they know it comes from a tainted source. And the dishonor they bring on the Gospel of Christ is the biggest evil of all

The use of the death penalty means that life is so precious that the only penalty that will suffice - the only thing that will pay the debt to humanity - is to forfeit your own.

The perverted scum has risen to higher positions of the church and in the seminaries. I have heard and read tht they have filtered out truly good men who they see as “too orthodox” who wish to go into the priesthood. There are good men who want to be priests - and many who managed to make it to priesthood, who are speaking our against the perversion.
Some of the stuff I’ve heard has made me sick to my stomach. I pray for those good men who are fighting against it.
