The Catholic Church canonizes, but does not demonize. There is no doctrine naming any person in particular as being in hell, no matter what we know about how they lived their lives. And why? Because there is always the possibility that at the very last minute, anybody could reach out to God for love and, to their great surprise, find it.

An old Catholic rhyme: “Betwixt the stirrup and the ground, / Mercy I asked and mercy found.”

However... we do not know this is what happened to this kid's dad in the ever-lovin' last second. We can't make a definitive judgment on his eternal destiny because we just do not know. Really and truly, it is beyond us.

So... well, I pondered this for awhile.

And it seems to me that the best thing to say would be:

"You love your dad so much. Pray, and keep praying, for his well-being and redemption, and that of the whole world.

"We don't know everything, because we cannot look into people's hearts. But we do know this: your dad's soul is in the hands of God. Trust him. This is what all the saints say, 'Trust Him, trust Him.' And God can absolutely be trusted to do the right thing."

Catholics also pray to dead people. I have a huge problem with that.

Better to remain silent and be thought an idiot, than to speak and remove all doubt.

Jesus says that those faithful ones who went before us are not dead, but living. They are all alive in God's eyes.

Jesus said that.

“God is mysterious but merciful.”

This. The one time a comforting platitude is called for, Mr. Obscure couldn’t come up with one.

The only intercessor we have is Jesus himself. His sacrifice was perfect.

We all intercede for each other IN CHRIST.

It's called intercessory prayer. He told us to do it.

Human nature is good. That’s Catholic Traditional teaching as well as theology. This guy sounds like a raving Baptist.

A + B + C = D.

Argentine origin + Jesuit order + Francis name = Marxist plant.

Whether it is or not:

Do you ever object to the vicious Lutheran bashing by Catholics on this site?

Do you?

This is not named as a Catholic Only site, despite the arrogant assumption of some:

Free. Republic.

Very apt quotation to comfort someone grieving! After all that is the time to be charitable, not launch into a treatise about the devil.

Human nature is good. That’s Catholic Traditional teaching as well as theology.

Then we didn't need anyone to "die for our sins," did we? There was already a religion from G-d. If "human nature is good," then what's the excuse for starting a new one?

And isn't "human nature is good" the underlying foundational belief of Leftism?

This guy sounds like a raving Baptist.

More redneck bashing from the rationalist intellectuals who have room in their hearts for illiterate Mayan peasants but not for poor folks in trailer parks.

You have no right to say such a thing. It is disgraceful.
