Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
The Shared Meal
(Old Testament)
Genesis 25
Jacob and Esau
19 This is the account of the family line of Abrahams son Isaac.
Abraham became the father of Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram[c] and sister of Laban the Aramean.
21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, Why is this happening to me? So she went to inquire of the Lord.
23 The Lord said to her,
Two nations are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you will be separated;
one people will be stronger than the other,
and the older will serve the younger.
24 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. 25 The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau.[d] 26 After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esaus heel; so he was named Jacob.[e] Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.
27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. 28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. 30 He said to Jacob, Quick, let me have some of that red stew! Im famished! (That is why he was also called Edom.[f])
31 Jacob replied, First sell me your birthright.
32 Look, I am about to die, Esau said. What good is the birthright to me?
33 But Jacob said, Swear to me first. So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left.
So Esau despised his birthright.

(End of Scripture Passage)
Rebecca's prayers for a child were answered, but before her sons were even born, she knew that the competition between them would be much more than mere "sibling rivalry". As they mature, their differences are so stark that their two parents are divided between them.
We see qualities in both men that are not endearing. Esau wants instant gratification. His hunt is unsuccessful, and he is hungry, but it is doubtful that he was actually STARVING. The fact that he would give away his birthright for a bowl of soup, at home, where he could have gotten something to eat anyway, indicated a carelessness about his family, his people, and his place in the Plan of his God, so much so that the Bible says that "He DESPISED his Birthright".
Jacob also shows some unpleasant qualities in this incident. Why would anyone deny his brother a little something to eat after an unsuccessful hunt? Perhaps Jacob knew that the Promise would come through him, and perhaps Rebecca had told him about the Prophecy that came to her while Jacob was still in her womb.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
In Western Music, we have many scales and modes, but they all can be put in one of two categories...Major or minor. Now, Major and minor are not "value judgements": as the scales are equal in "value" and so intertwined and overlapping, that the terms describe a MOOD, not a "judgement".
Although the Intervals in these scales (or modes) reach back to Pythagoras (The Triangle Guy!) they are used to this very day in nearly all our music, from Classical to Rock, Country, Pop, and Soul.
Here is a very simplified depiction of the difference between Major and minor:
Major:
Happy (like "Mary Had a Little Lamb", or "Happy Birthday")
Triumphant: (Like The Star Spangled Banner)
Fun (like "Charlie on the MTA")
Glorious (Like the "Hallelujah Chorus"
minor:
Sad (like the "Volga Boatman")
Romantic, Hopeful (Like "Hatikvah", Israel's National Anthem)
Mysterious (Like "Time of the Season" by the Zombies, "and "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin)
Dark (Like most Heavy Metal, but also some really lovely songs like "Moondance")
OK...so you get the picture. The scales are arranged in such a way that they overlap, and so every Major scale has a Relative Minor scale that has exactly the same notes in in, but just starts in a different place. I use the example of identical Twins to help the kids understand the relationship. This is really cool if the child HAPPENS to be a Twin, as he knows EXACTLY what I am talking about!
Look, I say, here you have two scales, C Major and A minor. They are identical twins. "C" was born first, and then "A", the other, six minutes later. "C" is strong, hairy, ruddy, and jolly, and "A" is romantic, contemplative, mysterious, and a bit of a trickster. They have the same DNA, but different souls. (Relative scales have the same Key Signature, but way different MOODS).
Esau is "C": boastful, vibrant, aggressive, and open about it. Jacob is "A minor": Moody, contemplative, dark, and tricky. He knows that his older brother thinks more about his immediate needs than something as nebulous and romantic as a "Birthright". A bowl of Lentil Soup and a hunk of bread was all it took!
Major and minor are both essential in our appreciation of Western Music. If everything was in a Major Mode, the music would become clownish and we would tire quickly of it. If it were nothing but minor cadences, it would become whiny and depressing. The perfect mix is when the scales overlap, shift back and forth, and run the gamut of our emotions. Although things look grim for Jacob and Esau right now, they are eventually reconciled, but it takes twenty YEARS for that to happen!

Interesting way to look at human nature and personalities. Much like Cain and Able. Same parents, so different.
Joining in prayer, left that other site, for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.
