Vatican: Pope did not say there is no hell
BBC ^ | 03/30/2018

Posted on 03/30/2018 8:49:24 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The Vatican has denied that Pope Francis told a well-known Italian journalist that "there is no hell".

The quote came in an article in Italy's La Repubblica daily. But the Vatican said "no quotations" in the article "should be considered as a faithful transcription" of the Pope's words.

The Vatican said the article was based on a private meeting the Pope had with the daily's founder, Eugenio Scalfari.

Catholic Church doctrine affirms the existence of hell and its eternity.

The souls of sinners descend into hell, where they suffer "eternal fire", the Catholic catechism states.

However, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the most senior Catholic in England and Wales, said "there's nowhere in Catholic teaching that actually says any one person is in hell".

He told the BBC that the Pope was apparently exploring "the imagery of hell - fire and brimstone and all of that".

"That's never been part of Catholic teaching, it's been part of Catholic iconography, part of Christian iconography," he said.

Note the misleading headline. The Vatican is not denying the pope said there is no hell - they are just saying since the article didn’t include verbatim quotes then they would disregard it. A very weaseley non-denial.

Well here are you some quotation marks.

Pope Francis says, “They are not punished, those who repent obtain the forgiveness of God and enter the rank of souls who contemplate him, but those who do not repent and cannot therefore be forgiven disappear. There is no hell, there is the disappearance of sinful souls.”

Oh, for crying out loud. Which ‘hell’ is the subject. The final, and end, for the rebels, last as long as it takes to burn up ‘souls’. That ‘fire’ has yet to be created. Nobody enters the lake of fire unwillingly, it is a choice they get to make. Furthermore, who wants to spend eternity being reminded of the ‘hell’ these rebels caused. The smoke from their demise will lift off into the atmosphere for all eternity... blotted out, but, those that overcome will NOT be spending one second remembering them.

The “Vatican” is claiming that since the interviewer didn’t RECORD the interview, that the INTERVIEWER incorrectly reported what popie said.

Because there is no “evidence” that popie said it.

There's a lot missing from Catholic teaching - and most of it is contained in the Bible...I grew up in the Catholic Church and as a teen opted to become an agnostic because I never heard the message of the Good News of the Gospel - just a lot of blather about tenets/canons/rite/and hierarchy. Took 35 years and a nondenominational church to get the clear message.

Malichi Martin was very worried that a Jesuit might become Pope. It has occurred, and it looks like he is determined to make the Catholic church unrecognizable. Retaining its power, of course.

Apologies, this thread’s original post is not the article that contains the weaseling about not recording the interview, and the conclusion that the interviewer’s quote is not to be trusted.

This one does:

Well, here's the Vatican's entire response, show me where it denies the pope saying there's no hell:

"The Holy Father recently received the founder of the newspaper La Repubblica in a private meeting on the occasion of Easter, without, however, granting him an interview. What is reported by the author in today’s article is the fruit of his reconstruction, in which the precise words uttered by the Pope are not cited. No quotations in the aforementioned article, then, should be considered as a faithful transcription of the words of the Holy Father."

This pope is like Obama. Obama always preferred chaos and confusion to clarity. Often with a simple statement Obama could have cleared up questions and misinformation but since he thrived on stirring the pot, he withheld such clarity.

Francis could issue a short, simple statement affirming his belief in the traditional Christian doctrine of hell.

Don’t hold your breath.

He is a false Pope-—the was a lot of shady dealings going on to get Benedict to abdicate. Benedict still walks this earth, and seems quite healthy. What happened there to get this charlatan in Rome, none of us will ever know.
Wayyyy to many stories of the news media not understanding what this Pope said for me to believe.
When my lib relatives say they like him—I get scared for my church.
We need another Polish Pope, soon!!!!!

Slag:

What the Pope appears to be saying, if this quote is accurate, is akin to “Annihilationism”, which has been around a long time and has been part of the core teaching of some evangelical, conservative protestant and Adventist-millerite theology since the early 20th century. This Pope, sometimes, imo, get to close with protestants in back in South America during his time as Cardinal. Nothing wrong with working together but this way of expressing “Hell” (if he said it) would not be the Traditional Catholic view.

In addition, the writer the Pope was being interviewed by is a well known Communist leader in Italy. As Fr. Z’s blog notes, who knows if The Pope was quoted accurately and if he did indicate he is favorable towards this “annihilation” view of Hell, then a private conversation with the Communist Eugenio Scalfi is just that, a private conversation.

Like I said to friends of mine and on this site I think as well. I tune out everything Pope Francis says. Nothing he has ever said was nothing more than his personal views, until he calls a Church Council or formulates something in an ex cathedra statement (similar to the Papal Apostolic Letter on the Assumption), the next time I will worry about anything related to Pope Francis is when I heard he hear he has passed away. I will pray for the repose of his soul and pray that the next Pope is more like the Late Pope John Paul II or Pope Benedict.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols disagrees not only with the Bible, but also with the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Nuff said.

You are so right about Pope Francis' confusion being a feature, not a glitch. He is double-tongued and habitually engages in double talk.

For instance: Pope Francis has previously spoken about the existence of hell in MANY public speeches, including at a prayer vigil in March 2014.

There he gave an address in which he said that members of the mafia should change their lives, “while there is still time, so that you do not end up in hell. That is what awaits you if you continue on this path.”

So I don´t trust this anti-hell "quote" from the nonagenarian atheist editor, Eugenio Scalfari, who proudly refuses to use a recorder or even to take notes.

BUT...I also wonder why Pope Francis keeps coming back to this guy ---- this is the 5th time he was interviewed by Scalfari ---- unless he just really, really likes churning things up and sowing confusion (His motto: "Hagan lio" --- "Make a mess".) This is not godly. Not in the least.
