The Gospel of Matthew
King James Bible Online ^

1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;

3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;

4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;

5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;

8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;

9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;

10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;

11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:

12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;

13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;

14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;

15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;

16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

I'm going to try to post a chapter a day from the New Testament, starting with Matthew. On Matthew 1, I just would like to mention that I know there are some verses in this chapter that Protestants and Catholics disagree about. I've participated in discussions about them myself in the past. Hopefully if there's discussion about those particular passages it can be civil.

Something interesting in this chapter that I never thought much about before is how the angel of the Lord addresses Joseph as "thou son of David." It seems like that has to be a reference to one of the two names the Jews had for the coming Messiah, "the Son of David" (Mashiach ben David, the reigning king) and "the Son of Joseph" (Mashiach ben Yoseph, the suffering servant).

Joseph is a blueprint for the Redemption.

The brothers should have recognized him because only Joseph would have known what the PM of Egypt knew. But there's the old saying about "if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck", or an Egyptian as it were.

1 Samuel 16:6-7 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him. 7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

Genesis 45:26 And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob's heart fainted, for he believed them not.

Governor: it's the same word as parable, proverb.

Joseph, dreams, Egypt... going down, coming up... and everyone assuming he died off early in the narrative. Not a mention after Jesus the Temple buff was located in the Temple, saying that he was about his father's business...

Saving the entire nation and also the world by a great deliverance.

Yes, very true. Neither David nor Joseph was recognized in those situations. Wow. And they were both lifted up by the Lord from lowly positions.

1 Corinthians 1:18-31 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

When Rachel named Joseph, she said it was because the Lord would add to her another son.

Everyone just assumes she meant Benjamin, but that’s the short view.

Rachel saw *in Joseph* another son (in the long view). Everyone has two parents, a father AND a mother. Rachel is the matriarch who is the mother of Israel, hence she is called Rachel Imenu, Rachel our mother.

Besides, the name she gave to her own second son was Benoni. That name was whisked off along with Rachel’s soul when she physically died, never to be mentioned again.

The typical dictionary/concordance explains the name as meaning “son of my sorrow” (derived from panting/exertion/labor in a sense of “all that work for nothing”).

However, the positive connotation is effort and extertion meaning strength, vigor - specifically in the sense of male virility, thus progeny.

Benoni is the name pointing down the line to her son through Joseph.

Bethlehem is like some kind of spiritual gate, portal.

Rachel, Benoni, Ruth, David, Messiah... it’s a hoppin’ little town.

She was buried on *the way to* Ephrath, which means fruitful.

Where are the scholars on all this, egads.

Yes; verse 25...

25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Catholics have been taught to think it says:

25 And knew her not; EVER!!!

Likewise; THIS verse... 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

...is understood to read:

20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife housekeeper, platonic friend and frustrater of a husband's normal desires...

That’s amazing. It all does connect to the Messiah. The Hebrew name meanings really are important but they’re not really talked about enough, it seems to me. I think I pretty much discovered it on my own that Jesus in Hebrew was Joshua and what Joshua means, and those are such important connections. Bethlehem’s “house of bread” meaning really makes you think. We know most of all that Jesus is the Bread of Life, but I wonder what else there might be to its name.

God with us ///

Many years ago a young teen in my Bible Study class asked how the creator of the Universe could be a man, a person named Jesus. I honestly did not know how to answer her, so we prayed for God to help us do it. The answer burbled up during an episode of Sagan's COSMOS. It involved dimensional limits and led to the story titled Flatland.

The short of it: Jesus told His disciples (in John 14) that all they could see of God The Father Almighty was what they could see in Him, for He is in The Father and the Father is in Him; as one temporal and three spatial variable beings, all we can sense of The Father Almighty is where HE intersects our limits ... a two spatial variable being is unable to sense a third spatial variable object, except where the three-D object intersects the two-D plane.

Jesus IS where the Creator God intertsected our limits ...

I put that in past tense because with His resurrection, He is now greater than our limits though not sequestered from our limits.

' When we see Him, we shall see Him as He IS, for we shall be like Him ' (see 1Thess4:13-17 and 1 Cor 15).

Bethlehem’s “house of bread” meaning really makes you think. We know most of all that Jesus is the Bread of Life, but I wonder what else there might be to its name.

Always simple meanings involved, as a house of bread is a... bakery. Grains are ground into flour. Flour, water, salt, yeast, a little sugar... kneading, rising, time...

The word in Hebrew for scent, fragrance, savor is reyach (ריח), which comes from ruach (רוח), spirit. Being the most detached from physicality, the sense of smell is considered to be the most spiritual of the senses.

Rachel Imenu, Rachel our mother. A baby recognizes his mother by her scent.
And bakeries are famously recognizable, not by sight but by smell.

Rachel died and her soul 'went out'. Then she was buried there, which was on the way to Ephrath, which means fruitful.

Rachel was buried on the way to fruitfulness, fruition.

This year (5778) marks 3570 years.

All basic concepts, meanings. Meanwhile,

Jesus said to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees (the teachings of the religious experts). Yeah because it's dead. Bread-making 101 - beware of dead yeast.
