Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Experts in Modern Warfare know all about Weaponry. Some of the weapons either in use or in production these days boggle the imagination. Lasers, heat-seeking missiles, neutron bombs, shells with spent uranium, night vision, armor-piercing rounds, and Kevlar are just a few of these innovations, and some of these are already obsolete.

Yet, I have a feeling that if one asks any Special Operations Commando what weapon he relies upon the most, and considers the most useful, he might smile and show you his Knife. With this precision piece of steel, our Commando can silently slay an enemy, dig a hole, or prepare his meal.

On TV, one of the shows that is advancing rapidly in popularity is "FORGED IN FIRE". In this program, people who practice the ancient art of the blacksmith compete to make knives and swords that will stand up to incredible abuse. Suddenly, a profession that was once thought to have gone the way of the buggy-whip-factory is blossoming anew.

And now, we have a plethora of programs about the Crusades and the Templars filling the airways. Just to name a few, these are "The Curse of Oak Island", "Unearthing America", "Knightfall", and the latest, "Buried, the Templars". Other "Sword & Sandals" series include "Vikings" and "Game of Thrones". These two are not about the Templars, but have a lot of SWORDS in them. To paraphrase the old Rock'n'Roll song, "There's a Whole Lot o' SMITIN' Goin' On!"

So, what is it about Swords? And why would God Almighty compare Himself to a Sword, when a Nuclear Bomb is a much more effective weapon? I have a few thoughts about this...and...as promised, I label them as just my thoughts.

1. The Sword is Personal. It is something that has to be wielded personally. It can't be just dropped out of an airplane, or sent with the push of a button. It can't lie in wait by the side of the road to hurt someone passing bay (like a landmine of IED) The sword has to be CONNECTED to a person.

2. The Sword is an Individualized Work of Art. A warrior would have most likely had his sword made for him by an expert Swordsmith. Even one episode of "FORGED IN FIRE" shows what happens when a sword is improperly or carelessly made. On the Battlefield, this could be fatal.

3. The Sword is Deadly. I love old Samurai movies, but the battle scenes are pretty bloody. Luckily most of them are in Black & White. I understand they used chocolate syrup to simulate blood in those old movies. In "Knightfall", however, it was red, red, red!

4. The Sword is Trustworthy. If properly made, the Sword will not fail the warrior. Guns jam if not properly cleaned and lubricated (I know all about THAT!), bombs can be duds, and missiles have been known to collapse in fire on the launching pad. There was a reason that, even up to the end of the Twentieth Century, a soldier's gun had a bayonet attached!

Which brings us to today's Wonderful Name of the One True God. He is indeed Our Sword. He is Personal, He is Unique, He calls us individually, He is like a Magnificent Work of Art, and He is Trustworthy. He will never fail us. By all means, avail yourself of the wonderful inventions of Civilization. But when all else fails, HE alone is Faithful.

The sword is personal... the sword is trustworthy.

Note that the word for sword (חרב, cherev), rearranges to friend, associate (חבר, chaver) which is rooted in chavar, a joining. Same root as Hebron.
