Even if one just relied on the text of the Book of Ruth, you see a woman loved by her sister and her mother-in-law — AND — who was a serious candidate for conversion. Naomi urged them to go three times — Ruth said no three times. Orpah said no twice, and recanted G-d (and women and people she loved and who loved her) on the the third time.
It sets her and her family to be the nemesis of Ruth and her family.
