The Fighting Irish have a bone to pick with Christopher Columbus.
Notre Dame students are calling for the removal of 12 iconic murals, which honor the famous explorer and have been on campus since 1884.
The students have reportedly teamed up with alumni, faculty and staff in an effort to get rid of the 19th Century paintings.
In this era of political divisiveness and a renewed rise of dangerous nationalism, it is time for Notre Dame to remove its own version of a Confederate monument, the group wrote in an open letter last week that was published in the school newspaper, the Observer.
It is time for the murals to go.
The letter was sent to university president John Jenkins and accompanied by more than 340 signatures. Many of those who signed it were Native American and chose to list their tribe.

Ill take em.
Note to the “fighting Irish”:
Go #### yourselves
From a Fighting Italian :)
BTW, the only Irishman on your football team is probably in his 70s now.
Maybe there are a few on the current team. But they are Definitely the minority :)
"...rid school of Christopher Columbus..."
Christ.
Makes me ashamed of my heritage. Hey, ya feckers, shut yer gobs!
Time for the students to go!!
“and accompanied by more than 340 signatures. Many of those who signed it were Native American and chose to list their tribe.”
I’d be surprised if there were 340 native americans at the school — or at least, that many who have more than a tiny percentage of their ancestry from native americans.
lol. It’s so detached from the Irish at this point that I wouldn’t sweat it.
It’s name only.
This feels like a 'loud minority' situation. Also probably just college activists looking for something to organize against more than anything else.
And I would object to anything which glorifies native americans, who fought to prevent ancestors of my tribe (europeans) from settling in this part of the globe.
Require that they present a 2000 word, footnoted essay on the factual case against Columbus.
Any bogus sources are grounds for failure.
Columbus was so much a devoted Catholic, a real believer. He was devout. Probably a good choice for a mural at a Catholic University like Notre Dame. WHY would they want to remove it?
Once theyre done with that, maybe they can blow up some statues of Buddha.
Kids today work harder trying to find something to complain about than they do their school work....
I am highly offended by that picture!!
Oops: County Clare!
Notre Dame stopped being “Catholic” like most years ago. I am at the point of “who cares?” point. They can take down the obnoxious “Touchdown Jesus” while they are at it.
Would they prefer that there was never european settlement in America?
How would the tribes have resisted Japan, or nazi Germany?
How would the world have been if there had been no giant transcontinental power like the USA?
Is that the alternative future they would have preferred?
My point is that the charges against Columbus are bogus and unsupported by history.
