Re the “History” aspect, before making up your mind, read Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, most of whom appeared in earlier history.

Many of the saints were jovial at the prospect of death. Cuthbert Mayne, a secular priest, replied to a gaoler who came to tell him he would be executed three days later: I wish I had something valuable to give you, for the good news you bring me
. Edmund Campion, a Jesuit, was so pleased when taken to the place of execution that the people said about him and his companions: But theyre laughing! He doesnt care at all about dying
.
Wow... Such Faith.. Brings tears to my eyes in admiration and gratitude.

Priest holes
definition
A priest hole is a hiding place for a priest built into many of the principal Catholic houses of England during the period when Catholics were persecuted by law in England. ...Many great houses had a priest hole built so that the presence of a priest could be concealed when searches were made of the building. They were cleverly concealed in walls, under floors, behind wainscoting and other locations and were often successful in concealing their occupant.
Many priest holes (priest closets) were designed by the Jesuit lay brother Nicholas Owen who spent much of his life building priest holes to protect the lives of persecuted priests....He was canonised as a martyr by Pope Paul VI in 1970.
