Cardinal Says Pope Francis Inspired Him to Get ‘Creative’ in Liturgy, Lets Lay People Read Gospel

November 13, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) — The cardinal archbishop of Wellington, New Zealand, ordered a change in the Mass recently that is “completely contrary” to the governing document for all celebrations of the Catholic Mass in the Ordinary Form, a “creative initiative” the cardinal said was inspired by Pope Francis.

Cardinal John Dew called for churches to divert from liturgical protocol of the Gospel reading conducted by ordained clergy with a Lectio Divina reading of the day’s Gospel performed by a layperson.

Lectio Divina — Latin for divine reading — is an ancient Benedictine practice of prayer involving reading and reflection of Scripture, followed by prayer and contemplation. It’s generally done individually, but can be done in a group, and it is not included in the Mass rubrics.

Cardinal Dew said, “This Lectio Divina initiative is a way the Archdiocese is responding to the plea of Pope Francis to make the sacred Scriptures better known and more widely diffused.”

“He has reminded us that we can take creative initiatives in our parishes so that we can become ‘living vessels for the transmission of God’s word,’” the cardinal said. “Lectio Divina is a wonderful way for us to become these living vessels.”

Instead of two readings and a responsorial psalm before the Gospel at Sunday Mass on October 29, there was to be only one reading (the Gospel), CathNews New Zealand reported, read by a lay reader.

“The lay reader – called the Lectio Divina Leader – will also guide the congregation through the Lectio Divina process,” said Cardinal Dew, “which involves both listening to and reflecting on the Gospel. The process is something all of us can do at home.”

Dew then provided specifics.

“What will happen is the reader will invite the congregation to close their eyes and listen.......

Benedict X was not the bishop of the local diocease, who as usual had his own set of rules.

Until the ‘60s that was the way it was all over the world.

Wide spread use of radio and television changed the world.

My typo. Benedict XV, not X. Cellphones. He was a Cardinal in Rome before becoming g Pope. When he became Pope he wrot an Encyclical called Spiritus Paraclitus recommending that all Catholics do this sort of thing. 1920 was well before Vatican II.

>> “Different religions have different rules” <<

So true!

But the worship of Yehova and his only begotten Son Yeshua is not religion; it is the effective alternative, and unlike religion, leads to eternal life.

The Orthodox do use a curtain or Iconostasis to remind the faithful that the eyes of faith are to be used to enter into the heavenly throne room. Ever read Isaiah six? It is used at every Mass for a reason—and my understanding is that the Apostles lifted the practice from the synagogue.

Now that’s interesting considering the curtain in the Temple was torn when Christ was crucified.

I believe the idea from the eastern point of view is that at the point of Our Lord’s death, the Holy of Holies became the heavenly Holy of Holies, and thus it was fitting that the earthly foreshadowing be decommissioned.

You’re the one that brought up Benedict, not me!

I just said that it was 100 years ago that the idiots excommunicated my Grand Father for buying a Bible.

What is your problem?

>> “The issue isn’t reading Scripture, but I think you know that.” <<

What do you imagine the issue to be?

The issue is the Nicolaitanism that is called the “Catholic Church.”

Yeshua said we are all equal.

The Scriptural point of view is what matters.

The effective sacrifice of the sinless kinsman redeemer has been made. There is no reason to sacrifice now.

This is also why the Mass is a Satanic lie.

100 years ago Pope Benedict XV was Pope. 97 years ago he issued an Encyclical greatly encouraging g the reading of scripture, something he had encouraged while a Cardinal by Gigi g away copies of Sacred Scripture to Catholics in Rome. This doesn’t really square with the story regarding your grandfather. By your account, the Pope would be excommunicated lie your grandfather.

Blame the person who said do this. By our understanding it is not a different sacrifice but a participation in the same sacrifice. The same priest acts sacramentally to make present the same victim sacramentally which is eternally offered to the Father.

Anyone on Earth that allows themselves to be called “
Priest,” “Father,” or “Rabbi” is an enrolled agent of the adversary.

That is by the word of the Only Begotten Son of Yehova.

The only error I made was mistyping a Roman Numeral. My apologies. If you read the Papal teachings from a 100 and a 125 years ago, it is evident that the story about your grandfather is complete garbage. There are two encyclicals on scripture from the era. I teach them every year. It is evident from your confusion of Benedict XVI and his predecessor that you know nothing of his predecessor and thus are rather presumptuous in accusing him of error.

you can only know the priest who claims to be Jesus from time to time...You can't communicate with Jesus outside of his mother or a supposed saint...

So tragically misinformed.

100% wrong!

Yeshua told us that every time we eat bread and drink wine we are to do it in remembrance of him. That is our everyday meals he was speaking of, not some seance by some agent of the adversary!

The bread we eat at every meal represents his body that was broken for us!

Please keep Satan out of our remembrance of our Savior.
