40 Days for Life keeps growing … Planned Parenthood keeps shrinking

September 27, 2017

As 40 Days for Life begins its eleventh year as a coordinated pro-life outreach, Christians began prayer vigils today in more than 375 locations around the world – the largest campaign yet for this pro-life movement.

“More than 150 of these peaceful vigils will be taking place in front of Planned Parenthood facilities in the United States,” said 40 Days for Life president Shawn Carney. “While Planned Parenthood remains the largest abortion chain in the United States, 2017 has not been a good year for them.”

As 40 Days for Life has grown even larger in 2017, just this summer Planned Parenthood shut down abortion centers in Chandler, Arizona; Vacaville, California; and Sioux City, Iowa. Additionally, Planned Parenthood announced it would ¬¬¬¬close referral centers in Casper, Wyoming and Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

“At all of those locations, faithful Christians prayed on the sidewalks outside during 40 Days for Life vigils,” Carney said. “All total, we are now aware of 90 abortion centers that have gone out of business permanently following 40 Days for Life vigils since our coordinated campaigns began in 2007. We don’t take credit. We just note that people prayed for an end to abortion in their communities, and the places that offered abortions then closed.

“Former Planned Parenthood employees have reported that the ‘no show’ rate for an abortion appointment goes as high as 75% when people are out in front praying,” Carney said. “Going out to these places is the ultimate way to defund the abortion giant.”

Internationally, 40 Days for Life campaigns are being conducted for the first time in three new countries – Bosnia-Herzegovina, Hungary and Taiwan. “All of our prayers – gathered together as one – can make an enormous difference,” said Carney.

40 Days for Life consists of 40 days of prayer and fasting, peaceful vigil and community outreach. Two campaigns are conducted each year – one in the fall, and one during the Christian season of lent. The dates for the current campaign are September 27 through November 5.

The first 40 Days for Life vigil was conducted outside a Planned Parenthood abortion center in Bryan, Texas in 2004. That facility closed in 2013, and the former Planned Parenthood building now serves as 40 Days for Life’s international headquarters.

DAY 17: I guarantee you this …

October 13, 2017

Abortion is never safe.

In fact it is considered unsuccessful unless a baby dies. And his or her death is the most violent you or I could imagine.

“Safe abortion” is a myth and a popular talking point from abortion advocates that further shows how disconnected they are with the scientific reality of life in the womb.

Not only is there obviously no safety for the baby, there can also be physical damage to the mother. There is certainly psychological and spiritual damage.

If abortion were safe (for the mothers, that is), you’d never see an ambulance in front of an abortion facility.

We’re aware of at least five ambulance calls already during this 40 Days for Life campaign.

The picture above (clockwise from upper left) shows ambulances at abortion centers in Houston, Texas (where two ambulances have been seen); Bogota, Colombia; Birmingham, England; and Walnut Creek, California.

Abortion is not safe — nor it is designed to be. It’s designed to kill our own children and is the most unnatural act in all of humanity. It is no wonder that ambulances outside of Planned Parenthood centers and other abortion facilities are such a common scene.

To say that abortion is safe is to live in a mythical world.

Hollywood, Florida

October 13, 2017

Just weeks after Hurricane Irma gave Hollywood a pummeling, more than 25 volunteers joined in peaceful prayer outside the local abortion center.

“This was the first time many of us connected after the storm,” said Nancy in Hollywood, “and in spite of damaged roofs, blown away fences, and fallen trees and debris still littering lawns and roadways, all said that they were called to be here.”

A typical Saturday at this business will see between four and eight abortions. On this day, there was but one – “still too many,” Nancy said. “We are determined to be here until this facility is closed.”

Jos South, Nigeria

October 13, 2017

“40 Days for Life is really working,” said Fatimah, the leader of this campaign.

“People are coming to the vigil point for prayers on a daily basis to ensure the end of abortion.”

Abortion is illegal in Nigeria – but abortions are unfortunately available nonetheless. This is a critical concern when it comes to secondary school girls, who will turn to abortion because they do not want to withdraw from their studies.

“Many female students are calling our team leader,” said one of the volunteers, “thanking her because they didn’t know the effects of abortion” or fully understand that “life is precious and worth living.”

The campaign will continue its outreach, particularly to the youth. “God is by our side,” the team member said, adding that they would continue “to visit most vulnerable places where young girls are committing abortion.”

DAY 18: Abortion is not vague

October 14, 2017

The abortion industry won’t talk about one thing — abortion.

They avoid the gruesome reality of abortion through vague phrases and rhetoric like choice, privacy and reproductive health.

If you spend any time at a vigil outside an abortion center, you know that the woman seeking abortion isn’t living in a vague world. She is scared and feels she has no other choice — and in some cases, that “choice” is actually forced upon her.

One campaign tells of a grateful woman who stopped by to thank vigil participants for standing in prayer.

When she was 13 and pregnant, her mother tried to force her to have an abortion. The pressure was so strong that she ran away from home … and fortunately found help at a home for pregnant, homeless women. Her story had a happy ending – through the grace of God.

Not all women are so fortunate. And that is why we stand and pray.

Sacramento, California

October 14, 2017

The 40 Days for Life team chatted with a cheerful woman outside the abortion business.

She was telling her children they were going to have a baby brother or sister as she’d just found out she was ten weeks pregnant.

The volunteers gave her information about all the local services that could help her and her family … and she started walking down the street.

The happiness, apparently, was not shared by the child’s father.

He came storming out of the abortion center … drove off after the woman and children … and was soon back in the parking lot with the mom and kids in the back seat. He parked behind the building.

A short time later, the woman ran out in tears, screaming, “Help me! I have to get away from him!”

Volunteers helped her find refuge and called the sheriff. Four deputies, including a domestic violence counselor, quickly arrived. They asked the man to leave, then waited with the woman until other family members arrived.

“How would this story have ended, if no one was there to help?” asked one of the volunteers, who noted the importance of keeping resources for victims of domestic violence victims at the vigil site.

Please keep this family in your prayers.

Bloomington, Indiana

October 14, 2017

“When they say ultrasound saves lives,” said Monica in Bloomington, “they aren’t joking!”

The 40 Days for Life team reports countless blessings at the newly-opened Women’s Care Center – a pro-life outreach that is right next door to Planned Parenthood.

Monica met a woman and her mother, who were just beaming.

“The young mother stopped and told me that she just found out that she was pregnant and even had an ultrasound,” she said. The ultrasound image showed a 10-week old baby, sucking a thumb.

“The clarity of the image was incredible,” Monica said, “and I know it had greatly affected these women. It was such a grace to share in their joy for this new life!”

In addition, two mothers have turned away from abortions at Planned Parenthood. “Praise God! The prayers are already having an effect.”

Every minute of every hour of every day – for 40 days – there is always someone, somewhere in the world, praying for an end to abortion.

Isn’t that a beautiful reality for battling our cynical culture?

There are 40 Days for Life campaigns currently under way in 24 countries ... and today we go on a world tour to just a few of them.

No matter where YOU are in the world, you don’t just have to read about the prayer — you can JOIN it. We still have the entire second half of the campaign to go, so please find your vigil and pray with us!

Ijebu Ode, Nigeria
Father Peace Ike leads the 40 Days for Life effort in Ijebu Owe.

From the start of the campaign, he said, “I asked the students and teachers of St. Joseph Nursery/Primary School to pray and fast for both the aborted children and those who committed the crime of abortion.”

When it comes to fasting, he said it is customary to fast from food. But he asked them to consider “fasting from doing bad things instead.”

On Nigerian Independence Day, Father Peace organized a pro-life retreat and seminar, where they again “prayed for the aborted babies and those responsible for abortion.”

Nasaud, Romania

The 40 Days for Life leaders in Nasaud were a bit concerned about this campaign – a number of the people who had volunteered previously said they just couldn’t help out this time.

“But we prayed for it long before it started,” said Daria in Nasaud, “and God did answer. It is amazing that several women volunteered for many hours per week, even though they had serious health problems.”

New vigil participants keep getting involved. There was one woman in particular who was “really thankful for us inviting her to our vigil,” Daria said, “and promised that she will come again.”

Cape Town, South Africa
Nine 40 Days for Life campaigns have now taken place in Cape Town … with people praying outside a facility run by the London-based global abortion giant Marie Stopes.

The group shown in this photo has made a regular commitment to pray on the sidewalk … though on this particular day they were delayed a bit by unexpectedly heavy traffic.

Nonetheless, they’ve promised to return … including a visit on Day 40, November 5.

Leeds, England
It has been an eventful campaign for the 40 Days for Life team in Leeds, where the prayer volunteers continue to have interesting interactions with both passersby and clients outside a large Marie Stopes facility.

Chris, the local coordinator in Leeds, recalls one man who stopped to ask what they were doing.

“I told him what the place was,” he said. “He had thought it was a church!”

The man told the volunteers to not let anyone stop them from doing what they were doing.

Lagos, Nigeria

Morris Joseph Igwe, the campaign leader in Lagos, says the 40 Days for Life efforts there have gotten a big boost from the Catholic archdiocese and Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins.
“In a world where eugenic and utilitarian mentality rule,” Morris said, “the culture of death … in turn has no regard for human life, especially the poor, weak and vulnerable.”
He said the 40 Days for Life team members “are Ambassadors for Life. Being a pro-lifer is an attitude that flows from one’s being. It is an attitude of love and compassion.”

El Paso, Texas

October 16, 2017

One thing you can say about 40 Days for Life prayer volunteers is that they never give up hope – even when hope seems lost.

More and more women are being sold “medical” abortions – the RU-486 pill. Actually … it’s two pills. One is taken right away and the other is consumed later.

A mother in El Paso took that first pill – then regretted her decision and wanted to change her mind.

If you haven’t heard about this, it IS possible – there’s a website called AbortionPillReversal.com that explains. This young woman contacted a local physician in El Paso who might be able to help.

Several days later – she had not taken the second pill to complete the abortion – she went for an ultrasound. This was a crucial time. Frankly, the reversal process is not always successful.

But in this case, she heard her baby’s very strong heartbeat.

This is encouraging … but the volunteers also say it’s very important to keep this mom and her baby in prayer during this critical time.

“Praise God for his grace, for our volunteers, for our pregnancy help centers, and for the local doctors who specialize in this amazing reversal procedure!” said one of the local 40 Days for Life leaders.

Birmingham, England

October 16, 2017

“Four saves so far,” said Isabel, the local 40 Days for Life leader in Birmingham.

“One mother in particular said she was so happy she had decided to do the right thing.”

In another instance, a Birmingham volunteer wrote that while she was praying outside the abortion center, a teenage girl who was about to enter stopped to talk. Following their discussion, the girl agreed to visit a pregnancy care center instead.

“No one else knows I’m pregnant and I didn’t know what to do,” she said. “All day yesterday I was walking around town by myself praying that God would give me a sign if He wanted me to keep my baby, but there was no sign.”

Without the sign she was seeking, she decided to keep her abortion appointment. “But as I came to the entrance … I saw that lady holding a cross and I knew that was my sign to keep my baby.”

This story is even more miraculous when you consider that this young woman — who was inspired by the Cross — was not a Christian.

DAY 21: The right choice on the Left Coast

October 17, 2017

There are more 40 Days for Life campaigns in California than any other state … and in fact — to the surprise of some — the campaign is strong on entire West Coast of North America!

Katharine O’Brien, 40 Days for Life’s director of youth and Hispanic outreach, just got back from a visit to Washington and British Columbia.

She found resolve…..courage…..and hope in unexpected places.

Victoria, British Columbia

The 40 Days for Life team in Victoria faces a bit of an obstacle. Buffer zone laws require the vigil to be across a major intersection from the abortion facility, which is then tucked away among a group of stores.

Despite that restriction, Katharine said police officers came by to thank volunteers for being cooperative. “They have been supportive of the rights of the campaign,” she said, “and helped when they’ve had incidents of aggressive opposition.”

During the time Katharine was at the vigil, passersby were highly positive in their response.
