Something to consider.
"...Amy's response..."
That is wonderful to see. Courageous answer.
I hate to say it. But sometimes these ‘letters’ are faked so that the writer of the column can put something in that they’re dying to say in print. To keep interest in the column they must have some odd ones, some unique ones, some funny ones and some sad ones.
I don’t know if ‘Ask Amy’ does that, but I have read that others do. This letter’s so stupid that I suspect it may be the case here.
Now donning flame proof underwear.
I totally agree that the letter is fake. I cannot imagine hitting more “hot spots” than the author hit in just a few paragraphs. Phrases which are specifically meant to enrage the majority of readers, such as “we are churchgoers” but she is sporadic. I know that if anyone in our church used that phrasing, they would find themselves the exact center of whatever sermon the Pastor decided to dish out.
That would be the one person you SHOULD be inviting out, not the last.
It’s like the author of the column thinks up a zinger of an answer and then crafts a “letter” to facilitate said zinger, thereby keeping interest in their witty reportage going. That trick is old as the hills.
Who reads damn lying papers anymore anyway?
If that is the best “Amy” can do, she probably needs to find another career.
I guess I need to "Ask Amy" if it is bad that I write like that.....
They still ‘print’ newspapers?
I remember Ann Landers and her twin sister. Do they still RUN “Peanuts”?
Print or electronic.....FAKE NEWS.
Time was the funny pages were only one or two sheets. Now it defines the paper from cover to cover.
Funny business
I would say this is one area where women differ from men. I can't imagine any man caring if younger brother tagged along for a "boys weekend out". Men just don't get worked up over catty stuff.
Dear Amy,
I am a sophomore at a small, Midwestern liberal arts school. I never thought these stories were true, until...
“I totally agree that the letter is fake.”.
To the “nay sayers”.... Fake or not, there ARE people just like the one who may/may not have written the article, they DO EXIST. Such people are very self centered and a relative or not, think they are above others just because they do not agree with them, have different interests or positions in life. I have seen a number of such people in my 80 years. Perhaps you may even know a few yourselves.
The “Amy” response was spot on, a direct hit right between the eyes!
“Phrases which are specifically meant to enrage the majority of readers, such as we are churchgoers but she is sporadic.”
I’ve know people to use that phrase.
Not fake, imho. What the letter omits is what is most-telling.
I suspect that politics are poisoning this relationship.
Read between the lines. I think the ostracized sister is a Conservative.
Great answer!
I find this whole thing bizarre and admit I’m on the woman’s side who wants to go to the city without her sister. She admits it’s expensive and is she expected to also pay for her sister? Why does the sister want so badly to go that she would cry enough to cause the woman’s husband to threaten to call the police? The sister sounds unstable and not someone you want to spend a weekend with. Just because they share blood doesn’t mean they’re both nice people and enjoy spending time together. She says she’s “helped” her sister. I assume that means financially. That doesn’t mean they need to be bonded at the hip.
I admit the “churchgoer” part is the real strange part. That does make it feel like a put-up letter to knock down churchgoers. I have a friend who claimed to be conservative, went for Hillary and is fervently anti-religion. She has slowed down sending me pro-abortion materials, but is now starting up with anti-religious. Her mother, while dying, was approached by an unethical minister to donate large amounts to his church. So I sympathize with her feelings toward a small percentage. But religious people need the same freedom to pursue their beliefs that non-religious people do. No more, but definitely no less. This feels like more liberal “my way or the highway.”
Hope the ladies enjoyed their outing.
I would conclude the exact opposite. The gang are all somewhat religious and religious people tend to conservatism where as the excluded women is more likely to be liberal. I might point out that the in group certainly is not acting quite christianly.
