An excerpt from the new book 'Politics and Society,' in which the Holy Father sat down for an unprecedented 20 candid interviews
Here is another selection of excerpts from Politics and Society, a new book-length interview with Pope Francis, in which the pope deals with some of the hot-button issues of our day.
Pope Francis sat down for 20 conversations with French journalist Dominique Wolton for a book-length interview that will be released in French on Wednesday. The 432-page volume is titled Politique et société: un dialogue inédit, or Politics and Society: Conversations with Dominique Wolton.
Wolton conducted the interview sessions over the span of two years, the first time that the pope has given such a lengthy amount of time to a project like this.
Wolton is a sociologist and the director of Frances National Institute of Communication Science (lInstitut des sciences de la communication), known for a book-length interview with the former archbishop of Paris, Jean-Marie Lustiger.
The French periodical Le Figaro has published some excerpts of the book; Aleteia offers you a provisional translation of some of these.
Rigidity scares me
Pope Francis: Behind any kind of rigidity, there is an inability to communicate Think of rigid priests who are afraid of communication, think of rigid politicians Its a form of fundamentalism. When I meet a rigid person, especially when it is a young person, I immediately think to myself that he or she is ill. The danger is that they are looking for security. In this context, let me tell you a story.
When I was novice master in 1972, we gave guidance and direction to candidates who wanted to join the Society of Jesus (the popes religious order Ed) for one or two years [

So, by this token muslims are very rigid and they are steeped in fundamentalism. Is Pope talking about his being afraid of muslims?
He’s been enjoying the view at Lake Flaccid
Moral principles are just more “rigidity” .... this is a relativist Hippie Pope.
Rigidity is sometimes beneficial and or necessary. Don’t drive over any Un-rigid bridges. And men pay billions for viagras. Speaking personally, I’d be much happier if pope Francis would at least support ( rigidly or even limply) basic faith principles.
He is free to ignore the laws of physics at his own peril.
Is the pope showing his gay phobia or is he wishfully thinking?
He’s such a snowflake.
Let me fix that:
Behind any kind of rigidity [like the Ten Commandments], there is an inability to communicate
Think of [a] rigid priests God who are [is] afraid of communication, think of rigid politicians
Its a form of fundamentalism. When I meet a rigid person [God], especially when it is a young person, I immediately think to myself that he or she is ill. The danger is that they [He] are [is] looking for security.
The Pope preaches sand.
What the compromised fool pope meant to say was that “reality scares me”.
He said rigidly.
I agree with Pope Francis where rigidity to the misguided traditions of men is concerned. Note that Mark 7:1-13, especially verses 6-13, shows us that Jesus warned us that such traditions nullify Gods commands.
On the other hand, Matthew 5:18 shows that Jesus taught that neither the smallest letter, or the least stroke of a pen, will disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
Ask Jesus.
The story he tells amplifying the remark is interesting. He seems to be talking about people in authority. The rigid person in the story was profiled out of the order, because extreme rigidity was seen as a sign of inner weakness. That person, presumably, can benefit as a lay person from the structure and rules of the church, but is perhaps not suitable for leadership. Don’t know if it makes sense, but it’s interesting.
He’s got a point. How rigid would a man have to through a fit in a temple over some small businessmen practicing their trade? How rigid would you have to be to love your enemy? After all, only ac compulsively rigid person would do something that could result in their own harm? What kind of rigid person would rather have a millstone around their neck, than make a mistake? What kind of a rigid man would tell a rich young man to give away ALL his wealth? He could tell him to give away some, but ALL, that’s just incredibly rigid! What kind of rigid person would be mean to a woman with a sick daughter? And what kind of person goes around calling people hypocrites all the time? That surely shows a rigid mind? A psychologist today might tell us that someone who would do all these things was pathologically rigid.
Lord, how long is this all going to last?
I think he was referring to the Cardinal standing behind him.
Just leave the young boys alone.
Turgidity doesn’t scare him.
