What Really Happened at Nicea?
Christian Research Institute ^ | June 10, 2009 | James R. White

Summary

The Council of Nicea is often misrepresented by cults and other religious movements. The actual concern of the council was clearly and unambiguously the relationship between the Father and the Son. Is Christ a creature, or true God? The council said He was true God. Yet, the opponents of the deity of Christ did not simply give up after the council’s decision. In fact, they almost succeeded in overturning the Nicene affirmation of Christ’s deity. But faithful Christians like Athanasius continued to defend the truth, and in the end, truth triumphed over error.

The conversation intensified quickly. “You can’t really trust the Bible,” my Latter-day Saints acquaintance said, “because you really don’t know what books belong in it. You see, a bunch of men got together and decided the canon of Scripture at the Council of Nicea, picking some books, rejecting others.” A few others were listening in on the conversation at the South Gate of the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City. It was the LDS General Conference, and I again heard the Council of Nicea presented as that point in history where something “went wrong,” where some group of unnamed, faceless men “decided” for me what I was supposed to believe. I quickly corrected him about Nicea — nothing was decided, or even said, about the canon of Scripture at that council.1

I was reminded how often the phrase “the Council of Nicea” is used as an accusation by those who reject the Christian faith. New Agers often allege that the council removed the teaching of reincarnation from the Bible.2 And of course, Jehovah’s Witnesses and critics of the deity of Christ likewise point to that council as the “beginning of the Trinity” or the “first time the deity of Christ was asserted as orthodox teaching.” Others see it as the beginning of the union of church and state in light of the participation of the Roman Emperor, Constantine. Some even say it was the beginning of the Roman Catholic church.

Yes, God shepherded the Church through contentious times, with many heretics, not unlike our day. [Lifelong Protestant Evangelical here].

You are divorcing yourself from 2,000 years of learned Christian reflection and sound doctrine, imagining that your “spiritual insight” is correct and the collective doctors of the Church are wrong. Sorry to say but there is not one inota of reason why anyone should pay you the slightest attention.

You err greatly in your disdain for two millennia of Christian reflection, which in your view amounts to nothing compared to your supposed “spiritual insight.” I can preach it better than you, born and raised a Baptist with theological degrees in leading Evangelical colleges.

But one thing is missing in all that- Something called the ‘day of the new moon’.

That is also known in scripture as the new moon day or 1st day of the month.

And according to scripture, specifically Ezekiel 46:1, that day isn’t one of His 6 ‘working days’ or His Sabbath.

It’s another day. That Rome ignores. But it wasn’t,and isn’t, ignored by the Father or the Son.

The template is found in Ezekiel 46:1.
1 Day of the New Moon
6 Working Days
1 Sabbath Day

Judaism and Christianity have no idea what the ‘Day of the New Moon’ means.

With study one can know The Son, The Word Made Flesh, was born on the ‘Day of the New Moon’.
A day set apart as the 1st day of the Father’s months.

And that day isn’t one of His 6 working days, according to scripture.
Judaism and Christianity don’t understand this but those who follow Him can know this.

And it would start to answer questions as to why Israel was to circumcize boys on the ‘8th’ day.

Or why the 10th Day of the 7th month is ‘holy’.

Or why it is written the Father finished His Work of Creation on the ‘7th’ Day in Genesis 2 and also rested on the 7th Day from all His work (that is a contradiction that some versions of the bible have corrupted- but it’s not a contradiction with the Father’s calendar, which includes the New Moon Day)

Noteworthy, there are Jews and Muslims and even some Christians that do note the ‘new moon day’ each month.

But what they miss is that, according to scripture, that day is separate from His 6 working days and His Sabbath. those folks tend to jumble them together, to their blindness.

The Father counts 1+6+1 unlike rome and the world that counts 6+1. every calendar that doesn’t start with 1+6+1 is a counterfeit.

That 1+6+1 is in the scriptures.
And can be seen in the very life, death, resurrection of the Savior of the whole world. and the very work of Creation, Redemption and Convicting the world of sin, righteousness and judgment.

That 1 in the front of the ‘6’ is the Day the Word Became Flesh and it’s no accident rome ignores it.

They prefer to peddle December 25. they can get away with it because they control how people tell time.

But when following the Father’s calendar, one can understand that when a young Jew is born on the 1st Day of the month, a set apart day, the ‘8th’ Day,when is circumcised, is the Father’s ‘7th Day Sabbbath’.

And one can start to understand why the Son finished His Work on the 14th Day- like the Father finished His Work of Creation on the ‘7th’ Day (again Genesis 2 contradiction riddle if one doesn’t have a corrupted version)

1+6+1 is not found on Jewish calendars or rome’s calendars.
But it is found in His Word and on His calendar.

And when one understands when He was born, one will start to see the Word Become Flesh.
And the version rome peddles is false. and they can only peddle it because they control the calendar.

And no calendar is going to be good enough until they acknowledge what the Scriptures say-
His New Moon Day, or Day of the New Moon or 1st Day of every month- is not one of His 6 work days or His 7th Day Sabbath

The calendar of the Kingdom is all about Him. And 1+6+1 tells His story.
And the story of Creation, Redemption and Convicting the World of sin, righteousness and Judgment.
The story of justification, sanctification and glorification, too.

Or people can assume rome is correct.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This powerful affirmation in God’s holy Bible destroys your vain pretensions.

Thank you for insulting my character along with one of the standard "proof texts". Whenever that happens, I end up with a huge blessing.

(If people knew what they were doing, they wouldn't do that.)

These three passages put their spiritual holier-than-thou-ness to rest.

Romans 14:1-9 As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.

Galatians 4:8-11 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? You observe days and months and seasons and years! I am afraid I may have labored over you in vain.

Colossians 2:16-23 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

From the OP article:

Why do Christians believe in the deity of Christ today? Is it because they have been forced to do so by legislated theology from councils and popes? No, it is because the Scriptures teach this truth. When orthodox believers affirm the validity of the creed hammered out at Nicea, they are simply affirming a concise, clear presentation of scriptural truth. The authority of the Nicene creed, including its assertion of the homoousion, is not to be found in some concept of an infallible church, but in the fidelity of the creed to scriptural revelation. It speaks with the voice of the apostles because it speaks the truth as they proclaimed it. Modern Christians can be thankful for the testimony of an Athanasius who stood for these truths even when the vast majority stood against him. We should remember his example in our day.

I thought it quite interesting that every time the bishops would come up with a statement in simple biblical term each one was found to support Arianism, which was why they had to “go beyond what is written” (1 Cor. 4:6) to find a way to justify their duality creed. The thing to keep in mind about what led to the council of Nicea is that it was really a power struggle for the office of bishop of Alexandria where most of the people wanted Arius and the aged Bishop Alexander wanted the ambitious Athanasius, his assistant, to get the position. Arius had to go, so Athanasius, who history tells us had no scruples, made it into an issue of teachings with Alexander’s approval. The two were willing to split the Empire so Athanasius could get the position, which was one of the most powerful in Christendom at the time.

Not sure who your source is on that idea, but it is not an accurate portrayal of the events. From the OP article:

Under Constantius, council after council met in this location or that. So furious was the activity that one commentator wrote of the time, “The highways were covered with galloping bishops.”22 Most importantly, regional councils meeting at Ariminum, Seleucia, and Sirmium presented Arian and semi-Arian creeds, and many leaders were coerced into subscribing to them. Even Liberius, bishop of Rome, having been banished from his see (position as bishop) and longing to return, was persuaded to give in and compromise on the matter.23

During the course of the decades following Nicea, Athanasius, who had become bishop of Alexandria shortly after the council, was removed from his see five times, once by force of 5,000 soldiers coming in the front door while he escaped out the back! Hosius, now nearly 100 years old, was likewise forced by imperial threats to compromise and give place to Arian ideas. At the end of the sixth decade of the century, it looked as if Nicea would be defeated. Jerome would later describe this moment in history as the time when “the whole world groaned and was astonished to find itself Arian.”24

Yet, in the midst of this darkness, a lone voice remained strong. Arguing from Scripture, fearlessly reproaching error, writing from refuge in the desert, along the Nile, or in the crowded suburbs around Alexandria, Athanasius continued the fight. His unwillingness to give place — even when banished by the Emperor, disfellowshipped by the established church, and condemned by local councils and bishops alike — gave rise to the phrase, Athanasius contra mundum: “Athanasius against the world.” Convinced that Scripture is “sufficient above all things,”25 Athanasius acted as a true “Protestant” in his day.26 Athanasius protested against the consensus opinion of the established church, and did so because he was compelled by scriptural authority. Athanasius would have understood, on some of those long, lonely days of exile, what Wycliffe meant a thousand years later: “If we had a hundred popes, and if all the friars were cardinals, to the law of the gospel we should bow, more than all this multitude.”27

Movements that depend on political favor (rather than God’s truth) eventually die, and this was true of Arianism. As soon as it looked as if the Arians had consolidated their hold on the Empire, they turned to internal fighting and quite literally destroyed each other. They had no one like a faithful Athanasius, and it was not long before the tide turned against them. By A.D. 381, the Council of Constantinople could meet and reaffirm, without hesitancy, the Nicene faith, complete with the homoousious clause. The full deity of Christ was affirmed, not because Nicea had said so, but because God had revealed it to be so. Nicea’s authority rested upon the solid foundation of Scripture.

A century after Nicea, we find the great bishop of Hippo, Augustine, writing to Maximin, an Arian, and saying: “I must not press the authority of Nicea against you, nor you that of Ariminum against me; I do not acknowledge the one, as you do not the other; but let us come to ground that is common to both — the testimony of the Holy Scriptures.”28

Are you trying to discredit the message by discrediting the messenger? Is every non-Catholic wrong by default in your book? If there is something wrong with the content of the article, how about you address that instead of disparaging or trying to slander, the author?

I'll bet that person didn't even bother to read the OP article in full! Pretty sad when one imagines they get to tell everyone what they can or cannot read rather than ACTUALLY reading what the author said and addressing it intellectually. What laziness!

The reason Christians have ALWAYS met and worshipped together on Sunday is because that was what the Apostles did. It was to honor the day when Jesus had resurrected and had appeared to the disciples. Scripture tells us:

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” (Matthew 28:1-10)

Then we have the examples of the Apostles setting aside the first day of the week for the purpose of collecting funds to help other believers, to study the Scriptures and to break bread. From Why do Christians worship on Sunday?:

Scripture never mentions any Sabbath (Saturday) gatherings by believers for fellowship or worship. However, there are clear passages that mention the first day of the week, Sunday. For instance, Acts 20:7 states that “on the first day of the week we came together to break bread.” Paul also urges the Corinthian believers, “On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income” (1 Corinthians 16:2). Since Paul designates this offering as “service” in 2 Corinthians 9:12, this collection may have been linked with the Sunday worship service of the Christian assembly. Historically, Sunday, not Saturday, was the normal meeting day for Christians in the church, and its practice dates back to the first century.

Christians worship on Sundays in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is very important to remember, though, Sunday worship is not commanded in the Bible, and Sunday has not replaced Saturday and become the Christian Sabbath. While the New Testament describes Christians gathering and worshipping on Sundays, it nowhere states that Sunday has replaced Saturday as the Sabbath. They key point in all of this is that we are not to limit our worship to any particular day of the week. We are to rest in the Lord every day. We are to worship the Lord every day.

But getting back to the subject of this thread, what do you believe about the Deity of Jesus Christ and the Trinity?
