The Ark of the Covenant, The Tabernacle, and The Temple

1 Samuel 3

The Lord Calls Samuel

3 The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions.

2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the Lord called Samuel.

Samuel answered, “Here I am.” 5 And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

6 Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

“My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”

7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.

8 A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”

Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

11 And the Lord said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. 12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God,[a] and he failed to restrain them. 14 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’”

15 Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, 16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.”

Samuel answered, “Here I am.”

17 “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you.” 18 So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes.”

19 The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord. 21 The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

This Story of the Call of Samuel, is a Favorite of Sunday School Children everywhere Since this is a study of the Ark of the Covenant and its Journey through Scripture, we shall look at it from that perspective.

1. Samuel's little sleeping quarters were in the same room as the Ark! How can that be? Wasn't the Ark dangerous? From over a half-century, this item has been the source of all kinds of mayhem, from the punishment of irreverent and rebellious individuals to the Fall of Jericho. It was supposed to be covered by special blankets when moved, and moved ONLY on foot using carrying poles, and only by Levitical Priests. It was supposed to be sequestered behind a heavy veil, under a roof of many prescribed layers, and even then, only visited by the High Priest on Yom Kippur. And, you will remember, the High Priest wore little bells on his robe...just in case.

Contrary to the modernists who speculate that the Ark was some kind of Radioactive EMP Generator, or some kind of Alien Communication Device (sorry, I gotta laugh at this...it's SO silly!), the Power of the Ark was 100% SPIRITUAL. Remember, we KNOW what was in the Ark, and none of it was "radioactive".

2. Still, why was Samuel able to sleep in its Presence? He was not a Priest, not a member of the Family of Aaron, and not even a Levite!

3. In my very humble opinion, I believe the answer to this riddle can be seen in the earliest Chapters of Genesis. Adam and Eve were naked in the Garden but they were not ashamed. (Genesis 2:25) They were not ashamed because they were Innocent. Although there is no human being TOTALLY innocent before God (Romans 3:23), Samuel had the innocence of childhood. Life in the Sanctuary was all he knew. He was like the First Couple before the Fall, walking with God in the cool of the day.

4. In his innocence, Samuel did not even recognize the Call of God upon his life. When his sweet, peaceful sleep was interrupted, he thought the old Priest Eli was calling him! It took three times for Eli (who did not seem to have the anointing to discern the Call of God) to see that God was calling the child. It must have been heartbreaking for him to see that this boy, whose mother Eli had once accused of drunkenness, was being called of God, when neither he nor his worthless sons had ever experienced such an anointing. To make matters even more painful, the Boy Samuel's first Prophetic Utterance is a condemnation of him and his sons!

Recognizing the Call of God upon one's Life is a weighty matter. There are many calls that go unanswered, and there are many who gather a following over a False Call, or even decide for themselves that they are going to lead, when they are not anointed to do so. Jesus said, (speaking as The Good Shepherd in John Chapter 10) "…13The man runs away because he is a hired servant and is unconcerned for the sheep. 14I am the good shepherd. I know My sheep and My sheep know Me, 15just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.…

From the moment Samuel answers the Call with "Speak LORD, for Your Servant is Listening", he becomes a Man, a Prophet, The Shepherd of his Generation, and will become the Anointer of Kings.

12 In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.

13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

14 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.

15 And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.

16 Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.

17 And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
