Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Ark of the Covenant, The Tabernacle, and The Temple

Joshua 5

5 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they[a] had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.

Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal

2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.[b]

4 Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt. 5 All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. 6 The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. 7 So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. 8 And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed.

9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal[c] to this day.

10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. 11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. 12 The manna stopped the day after[d] they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.

The Fall of Jericho

13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”

14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord[e] have for his servant?”

15 The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

Footnotes:

1. Joshua 5:1 Another textual tradition we
2. Joshua 5:3 Gibeath Haaraloth means the hill of foreskins.
3. Joshua 5:9 Gilgal sounds like the Hebrew for roll.
4. Joshua 5:12 Or the day
5. Joshua 5:14 Or lord

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father In Heaven,
How Holy and Sanctified is Your Most Wonderful Name!
You Alone are Worthy To Be Praised and Worshiped,
For You Alone Are The One True God,
You Care for Every one of Your Creatures,
From the Mightiest Ruler of men down to the tiniest of plants.
Every seed that brings forth after its kind,
Every Person that has ever walked the earth,
Every star that explodes into a supernova,
Shrinks to a black hole and forms a galaxy,
And becomes the ocean of stars in the firmament,
Owes its very existence to You, and You Alone!

We Pray For the Leaders of Our Own Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
to do the Right Thing.

We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

There are Three Important Themes in this short Passage of Scripture, and each could take a whole study in itself.

1. The Sign of the Covenant The First thing Joshua does after crossing the Jordan is to renew The Covenant of Abraham by having all the males submit to circumcision. In the 40 years of wandering in the desert, the people had not kept up with this Ordinance, so now it was going to cause a lot more pain and recovery time than if the practice had continued throughout the Desert years. We can look at this in modern terms even in our own circumstances. (pun intended!). When the rule of law is allowed to fall by the wayside, when God's guidance is disregarded, and when social ties break down over a long period of time, it is much more painful setting things right than if order and righteousness had existed all along. Our great cities, which have been in a state of decay and lawlessness for generations are going to be very difficult and painful to "fix". There may even have to be blood spilled in order to "roll away" the reproach of the last half century. The name "Gilgal" means to "roll away" and reminded me of the question the women asked on the way to the Tomb of Jesus.
"Who will roll away the stone for us?"
We Know it was God Himself Who rolls away the stone that entombs us in our reproach and sin.

2. The Celebration of the Passover, and the Ceasing of the Manna The Passover is the First One in the Promised Land. It establishes the Israelites and states that they are a Nation Under God. As soon as they partake of the fruit of the Land, the Manna ceases. The Manna was just a temporary measure to get them through the 40 year sojourn in the Wilderness. It was not meant to be an endless "program". The Pot of Manna within the Ark would be all that was left...and we shall see in further study that even THAT disappears after a time.

3. The Warrior Angel Joshua asks the Warrior Angel which side God supports. The Angel's answer is surprising. He says that God isn't on one side or the other! Perhaps the question is "Who's side are YOU on? When the Israelites are "on God's Side", they win, but when they are not, they lose! (The Victory at Jericho is followed almost immediately by the ignominious defeat at Ai, all because of sin) Many times in History, BOTH sides prayed to the same God for Victory. So the question is not "Is God With Us?" but "Am I With God?".

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

God Bless America!
