I’ve been in many arguments with “Christians” who believe that you don’t have to be repentant to be redeemed, i.e. that practicing homosexuals who have no intention of stopping can be saved.

Show me a Christian who has completely stopped all sinful activities/thoughts after being saved and I'll show you a delusional person who ignores his/her sinfulness because they see someone else they consider worse than themselves. if we were capable of doing what you say is required, then He would not have had to die on the Cross for us.

How can one be sure if one has repented/atoned and has decided to really really really really try?

I'd wager a lot of those who go to Confession are going through the motions and have no problem getting Communion despite the fact that they know they cannot/will not stop the behaviors/thoughts that require Confession.

When mortals think they can prevent others from communing with God/Christ/Holy Spirit, them mortals have placed themselves mighty high in the Richter Scale of holier than thou-ness.
