Maintaining healthy relationships in our Christian life takes work and isn't always easy. And just as our daily walk with God requires humility, truthfulness and respect, no less so our earthly relationships. There's a term that comes out of marine tradition and practice, known as "keeping things above board." Ship crews who wanted to hide valuable cargo from inspectors would obstruct their view of it. They did this by strategically placing the cargo in the lower recesses of the ship. "Above board" in our English vernacular refers to things that are set in plain sight, transparent and done with integrity.

Luke 6:31
And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

Hebrews 13:18
Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly.

How confident are you that you've placed no obstructions in your fellowship with God, with your spouse and with your friends? If we're truly humble, we'd realize that improvements can always be made in baring ourselves to others. The writer of Hebrews was humble enough to say, "we trust we have a good conscience, in all things" whereas he might have said, "we know we have a good conscience." If we're not willing to admit that at times, we've been careless in our words, our actions and our attitudes towards others, then we won't find room for true repentance. Clearing our conscience should be a heart desire, not an "oops, I'd better come clean," after thought.

Proverbs 4:23
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Luke 6:45
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Maintaining a godly jealousy over our own heart is just good housekeeping. A well-informed, clean and pure conscience, will always be a wonderful testimony that speaks volumes for us and never against us. When it comes to our relationship with God and those around us, the less shady we are and the more of His light we desire to bask in, the more our relationships will expand and flourish.

Proverbs 19:1
Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

Proverbs 16:13
Righteous lips are the delight of kings; and they love him that speaketh right.
