If your book budget allows for it, this will rock your world.
I’ve always had a hard time with Keller’s writing style but he certainly a wonderful pastor rightfully handling the word of God. Good pastors with solid scriptural understanding are difficult to come by these days. I hope breaking the church up is a good idea. Yet I can understand his desire to move on. Many hang on too long.
I don't believe those membership numbers are accurate. As I recall, attendance far outpaces a much smaller number of real members on the roll.
Wikipedia seems to support that - it shows 5000 attending, but a membership of 1760. I don't know if that would even get it in the top 25 of the denomination.
We read thru and discussed that book with our teens.
How on earth did the first Christians manage when there was no written New Testament or the Bible for the first 400-500 years of ChristianityAlso, the NT was being written during the NT times and Paul even instructed his letters to be shared among the churches.
It's not true that there was no word of God for the first 400-500 years of church history.
Where do people get these odd notions?
GC, Thanks. Didn’t know about that book Will check it out.
Love Tim Keller and his work. Huge influence in evangelical churches. T hope he continues speaking and writing even though he’s no longer a pastor. Thanks for the post.
Ignoring plain historical facts?
He is cerebral. Everything rings true and makes you think.
He preaches the same sermon at all the different churches on Sunday, so people will not follow him around and make it all into a cult of personality.
You can follow him on Twitter. Special pearls of wisdom that he shares with us.
I see from some recent tweets, though, that he is pro-refugee. He needs to stop and think about that one.
I originally rejected his church during the Iraq War when someone got up and prayed for the Iraqis but not for our troops. I joined another church that is apolitical.
Could be he is receiving money from Homeland Security to help resettle refugees, as the Catholic Church and others are doing. I would be grossly disappointed in him if this is true.
The New Testament was completed during the lives of the Apostles—that is before the end of the 1st Century. There was some debate about some minor books in it up until the AD 300s or so, but the main books, which all the foundational teachings of Christianity rely, were available from about AD 65 on....just 30 years after the crucifixion.
So there wasn’t any substantial time period when the Church did not rely on bible, both Old Testament and....New Testament.
Since the Church was founded on the teachings of the Apostles—and the New Testament is the teachings of the Apostles written—the Church is founded upon the Bible, with her cornerstone being Christ Himself.
That’s a myth.
Listen to any decent NT apologist like James White, Michael Kruger or Dan Wallace and they’ll explain why that myth is false
