Leading evangelical Pastor Tim Keller is stepping down from his role as senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City.
But the move is not a shock to church members. The transition has been planned for years.
Christianity Today reports Keller made the announcement at all eight of the multi-site church's services Sunday.
The goal has been to transition the 5,000 member megachurch into three smaller, separate congregations with a pastor for each location.
While Keller will no longer be the church's pastor on July 1, he's definitely not calling it quits.
"I'm not retiring. Moving into a strategic role of raising up leaders and training the next generation," Keller tweeted.
He will be teaching through Reformed Theological Seminary and will still participate in Redeemer's City to City church planting network.
Keller is well known for authoring books like The Reason for God, The Prodigal God, and The Meaning of Marriage.
One of his church members offered this tweet, reflecting on Keller's announcement:
You jumped the gun he makes the argument for Christianity
One of my favorite pastors to listen to. Very intellectual, which is needed in today’s world. Has the uncanny ability to relate and converse with millenials, without compromising on the Christian faith. As other’s have mentioned, I got hooked onto to him after hearing the Prodigal God series...
I hope you are an equal opportunity critic when it comes to Catholics posting similar articles about the goings on of local bishops in their denomination.
There is no *one true religion*.
No religion is a true one. They ALL lead away from God and are man’s efforts to come back into relationship with Him but actually ultimately lead away from Him.
TRUTH is found in Scripture, not religion or religious activities.
It’s not a criticism, but I’ve never heard of the guy.
It’s not a criticism, but I’ve never heard of the guy.
When I see that gif of the people falling into the giant hole, it could very easily be representative of Catholics too. Mega churches don’t have a corner on that cult concept market that is trying to be depicted.
He is kind of a big deal in Reformed circles. :)
An influential writer and pastor, his Presbyterian congregation has been a beacon of truth in Manhattan, New York.
He is not really going away from ministry, but he is now going to focus, IIRC, on planting new churches.
His book “The Reason for God” is a pretty good argument for those who wonder if the Almighty is real.
Hope this answers your question. He has been a “missionary” of sorts to one of the darkest spiritual places in the United States.
OK, thank you for the information.
Something very sorely needed in the cities.
He will need a lot of prayer as the enemy will be fighting anything encroaching on his strongholds.
How on earth did the first Christians manage when there was no written New Testament or the Bible for the first 400-500 years of Christianity
Nearly all the downtown churches in the USA are liberal.
Keller set up the first downtown conservative church in the Manhattan in maybe 200 years. He has done the same in many cities in the USA and Europe which have not seen conservative churches in 200 years.
Its not a criticism, but Ive never heard of the guy.
Well, now you have.
The Old Testament.
They had Scriptures and they searched them to find out if what Paul was teaching was true.
Acts 17:11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.
This happened during the time of the NT when it was being written. They had Scripture there and they used it.
Also, the NT was being written during the NT times and Paul even instructed his letters to be shared among the churches.
It's not true that there was no word of God for the first 400-500 years of church history.
It doesn't matter if the Scripture were compiled into one handy resource or not so it's irrelevant that they didn't have what we call the Bible today.
They still had all the OT Scripture from the past and the NT Scripture that was newly written.
Hey, GC thanks for posting this.
I had not heard of the guy before but will be looking into his stuff.
Sorry for the late ping, I misplaced the ping list and had to find a copy in my archives.
