Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Book of Psalms

(Psalm 59)

Psalm 59[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.[b] When Saul had sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him.

1 Deliver me from my enemies, O God;
    be my fortress against those who are attacking me.
2 Deliver me from evildoers
    and save me from those who are after my blood.

3 See how they lie in wait for me!
    Fierce men conspire against me
    for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.
4 I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.
    Arise to help me; look on my plight!
5 You, Lord God Almighty,
    you who are the God of Israel,
rouse yourself to punish all the nations;
    show no mercy to wicked traitors.[c]

6 They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,
    and prowl about the city.
7 See what they spew from their mouths—
    the words from their lips are sharp as swords,
    and they think, “Who can hear us?”
8 But you laugh at them, Lord;
    you scoff at all those nations.

9 You are my strength, I watch for you;
    you, God, are my fortress,
10     my God on whom I can rely.

God will go before me
    and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11 But do not kill them, Lord our shield,[d]
    or my people will forget.
In your might uproot them
    and bring them down.
12 For the sins of their mouths,
    for the words of their lips,
    let them be caught in their pride.
For the curses and lies they utter,
13     consume them in your wrath,
    consume them till they are no more.
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
    that God rules over Jacob.

14 They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,
    and prowl about the city.
15 They wander about for food
    and howl if not satisfied.
16 But I will sing of your strength,
    in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress,
    my refuge in times of trouble.

17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
    you, God, are my fortress,
    my God on whom I can rely.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Those of you who follow this Thread know that I had a big heating disaster last week. This morning, my Hot-Water Heater died. I kid you not. The plumbers are here now.

Here on FR, we have something called "The Darwin Awards". It is a joke about people who do very foolish things with disastrous fatal results. However, many times in life awful things happen without the "foolishness" factor. It is when it seems that we don't deserve adversity that it is the most painful.

David lays out his case before the Lord. He is not sinless (none of us are!), but in the case of these enemies, David has done nothing to deserve their ire. The attacks are totally out of proportion to any perceived "insult".

After 9/11/01, pundits and academics have bent over backwards trying to find a "reason" that our enemy hates us. They are convinced that it is somehow "our fault". This Psalm says otherwise. Sometimes the enemy is just plain evil. However, the Psalm contains a solution for this sorry state of affairs. God is Our Fortress and Our Deliverer.

Please say a little prayer that the plumber will find the parts he needs...on Christmas Eve.

The Grotto

They've Improved it quite a bit,
It's got a marble floor.
You never can have too many lamps,
So it seems they've added more.
Rich drapery of Damask Silk
Trimmed skilfully with lace,
Surround the spot, marked by a star,
Where the Miracle took place.

But still, one has to go straight down,
Through an old door past the Nave,
Descend down many marble steps
To a damp and musty cave.
Although it no longer smells like sheep,
But like Frankincense and Myrrh,
We still see the humble place
Where The Miracle occurred.

The cameras all click and whir,
The Tour group presses on.
We've yet to see Jerusalem,
Tomorrow soon will dawn.
But I reach down and touch the Star,
That's bolted to the floor,
And know He's living in my heart,
And will, forevermore.

They had to drain the water out, replace three parts (The thermostat, the heating element, and something else) and then turn it on again full of ice-cold water. So now we have to wait a couple of hours to see if the water heats up.
