McDonalds plan to open its first restaurant in Vatican City has prompted criticism from cardinals living above the proposed site.
The fast food giant is reportedly willing to pay a few tens of thousands of euros per month to rent a property within sight of St Peters Square, according to the Guardian.
Cardinals claim that they were not consulted by APSA, the Vatican agency that owns the property, about the plans. Instead, residents were only informed after APSA had agreed to rent the ground floor of the property to McDonalds.
Cardinal Elio Sgreccia told LaRepubblica: Its a controversial, perverse decision to say the least. It is by no means respectful of the architectural traditions of one of the most characteristic squares which look onto the colonnade of St Peters.
Speaking on behalf of the seven cardinals who live in the property, Cardinal Sgreccia added: The space should be used instead to house entities which help the needy, in line with the Popes call for a poor church for the poor.
Pope Francis is among one of the former residents of the apartments above the site; he lived there before he began his papacy.
Faith of Our Fathers ping
They’re just pissed because they can’t get a Fillet O’ Fish for a buck on Fridays.
Everybody cool down. I understand the issue. McDonald’s uses more salt in Europe.
Maybe Frankie needs to build a bigger wall!
Humor Alert! Humor Alert!
You could really have some fun with this:
“At Vatican City McDonalds, we serve Communion all day!”
“You’ll LOVE our FILEO FISH!”
Seriously, a Vatican City McDs?
Gotta go check the bible.
This could be a warning sign of the impending apocalypse
Oh, calm down. Frankie deserves a Royale With Cheese just as much as any proletarian.
“’The space should be used instead to house entities which help the needy, in line with the Popes call for a “poor church for the poor”.’”
Did it have to take this brouhaha over a McDonald’s for the Cardinal to come up with this proposal?
IS IT INSIDE THE TEMPLE?
I thought they would be against it just due to low quality. They don’t use real meat in the burgers so that can’t be the problem. They could get a good quality place there with only a slight modification of the name. Picture the Vatican City “Popeeyes.”
Better yet open a Porky’s barbecue in Mecca.
Unlimited Holy Water ...
What’s the big deal, there’s 2 McDonalds less than 200 yards from St. Peter’s.
I love McDonalds especially when traveling overseas. Can’t tell you how great it is having a place where the staff is friendly, the place is clean, the food won’t give you the runs and the toilets aren’t a filthy swamp.
Everywhere I go I see moms and kids in McDonalds. Because it always a safe clean place.
I have to disagree. It ain’t food, it ain’t clean, and it ain’t friendly.
Frankly, It is cr@p.
Unlike the average McD’s in the USA
Why not they occupy space in almost every other civilized country in the world. The angels sing as glow appears around the golden arches?
NIMBY’s
The Catholic Church is being taken over and this is what they worry about?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Good lord...not in Vatican City!
Maybe a bronze Ronald McDonald atop the obelisk in the square?
“In nomine Domine et filli et Spiritu pepite di pol-loooo...”
UN-bleebable that its even considered....
