French Religious Leaders Ask Hollande for Increased Security

(ANSAmed) - PARIS, JULY 28 - French religious leaders met on Wednesday with President Hollande to ask for increased security in places of worship, following the attack in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray on Tuesday in which two armed teens claiming allegiance to ISIS took four people hostage and killed 84-year-old Catholic priest Father Jacques Hamel.

On Tuesday, Hollande spoke with Pope Francis and said France will "do everything to protect our churches and our places of worship".

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said the country's anti-terrorism operation "Sentinelle" will increase military presence to 10,000 soldiers, 4,000 assigned to Paris and the remaining distributed throughout the province.

He said more than 23,500 agents from the police, gendarmerie military police, soldiers and reservists will be dispatched overall.

On Wednesday the country's National Police Inspectorate (IGPN) issued its report on security the night of July 14 attack in Nice, when a lorry plowed into a Bastille Day crowd, leaving 84 people dead and 303 wounded.

On the one hand they're warning us about the evils of "Islamophobia" and calling for more acceptance of Muslims. On the other hand, they're begging for protection.

Wouldn’t it just be easier and cheaper to let them arm themselves.

That's exactly right. I've read that France has something like a civilian police reserve. Members have easy access to concealed weapons permits. It's pass time to swear in new members by the tens of thousands.

On Tuesday, Hollande spoke with Pope Francis and said France will "do everything to protect our churches and our places of worship"

I really don't get how Francis thinks this is all supposed to work out. On the one hand, he strongly advocates open borders and absolutely refuses to blame the migrants or Islamic ideology for the wanton violence that has been infecting Western countries. On the other hand, he talks to Hollande about getting more security for churches. Why do churches need more security if this was just the act of one crazy man and not connected to anything else? I am sure that French priests have been killed before in random acts of violence and the Pope doesn't talk to the president of France about more security for churches. Why is more security needed, Francis?

We know the people of France are capable of talking up arms to expel invaders. They've done it before.

Seriously, they think the next attack will be a church, again?
The Terrorists will simply attack wherever there is no security.

Actually, a couple of weeks ago, it was discussed that more people could join the police reserve duty, and be given the right to a weapon via that duty....meaning you could carry it while on and off duty. It does require an application and to be approved for actual police duty, and you need either weapons training, military time, or former cop duty in your background. I was thinking it’d be a great way to put half-a-million armed French citizens on the street within a hundred days. Nothing much has been said since the idea was floated within the French gov’t.
