Last Priest from Dachau Concentration Camp Dies at 102

The last Catholic priest to have been imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp has died at age 102.

Father Hermann Scheipers was a young priest in 1940 when he was arrested by the Nazis and taken to the camp, near Munich. Dachau had a large population of priests: some 95% of the 2,720 clergymen imprisoned there were Catholic.

Father Scheipers died June 2 in Ochtrup in Münsterland, the same town where he was born on July 24, 1913.

His work among young people, soon after his ordination, drew the attention of the Nazis. An obituary at KNA, a German Catholic news agency, translated by Mark de Vries, noted:

Because he was sympathetic with Polish forced laborers, celebrated Mass with them and heard their confessions, he was arrested [in] October of 1940 and brought to Dachau five months later. His file, which he came across by chance, states the true reason for his arrest: “Scheipers is a fanatical proponent of the Catholic Church and thus likely to cause unrest among the population.”

He wore the number 24255 on his prison uniform.

Some people never learned how Hitler persecuted Catholics. Priests were a PARTICULAR thorn in his side.

Réquiem ætérnam dona eis Dómine; et lux perpétua lúceat eis. Requiéscant in pace. Amen.

In paradisuum deducant te Angeli;in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres, et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Ierusalem. Chorus angelorum te suscipiat, et cum Lazaro quondam paupere æternam habeas requiem.

MAY GOD’S HOLY ANGELS ESCORT HIM TO PARADISE.

this is another part of unknown history, a story that is never told. The average person believes that the Catholic Church was an ally of Hitler and Mussolini. There were a lot who died in concentration camps, mostly in Poland.

“Some people never learned how Hitler persecuted Catholics. Priests were a PARTICULAR thorn in his side.”

There was a program on the AHC about Hitler and it was saying that he was an alter boy and that his mother wanted him to go into the priesthood, I guess that’s why he hated the Catholics priests so much.

There is newsreel footage, since scrubbed from our memory, of catholic nuns being herded into death camps. The one I remember most has a few seconds of the nun, with the Flying Nun headgear, kindly and gently herding the children around her to their final destination as they were processed into the camp.

I'm not some kind of "junior sychiatrist," but it's well-known as a youth, Hitler was embittered both by the brutality of his father and by his failure to be accepted as an artist by the institutes of fine arts in Vienna. After Germany's crushing defeat in WWI, he developed a venomous paranoid "they-stabbed-us-in-the-back" attitude toward both Jews and Catholics, whom he saw as being united against authentic "Volkische" Germanism racially, culturally and politically.

One of the big influences on his was the German nationalist Georg Ritter von Schönerer, who advocated an anti-Semitic, anti-Slavic, and anti-Catholic "Pan-Germanism."

Ref: “this is another part of unknown history, a story that is never told. The average person believes that the Catholic Church was an ally of Hitler and Mussolini. There were a lot who died in concentration camps, mostly in Poland.”

You are absolutely right. This has been a result of nearly 90 years of Spanish Communist, Nazi, and Soviet propaganda in the Socialist war against the Church. Most of the charges of being pro fascist and Antisemitic started with the Spanish civil war where the communist killed over 6000 Catholic Clergy including 16 of 18 Bishops. Franco was not a fascist, but was painted as such during War War II because of his staunch opposition to the communist and support of the Church. The Church, including the Pope (who hid over 5000 Jews in his personal summer residence from the Nazis), actively opposed the Nazi genocide programs. But they did it in ways to avoid a repeat of the Spanish communist war against the Church in Germany. Finally, because Polish identity is thoroughly tied to Catholicism, both were painted in broad strokes with the accusations of Antisemitism to undermine popular support for the people of Poland in England and the US during the Cold War. There is a concerted socialist effort to continue this messaging today.

That's quite a leap in logic. He hated the priests because they told him that what he was doing in Germany was wrong. It WAS wrong and he knew it. THAT'S what angered him so much because THEY and HE both knew the truth: Hitler was Satan's buddy for those years.
Whodda thunk that Austria would produce such a beast?

LOTS of mothers would like their sons to become ALTAR boys but when they DON'T become ALTAR boys...they don't become "Hitlers." That is also faulty logic.
Not even Hitler wasn't so stupid as to hate ALL Catholic priests. No one is that stupid.

The Catholic Church has been fighting evil for the 2000 years since Jesus established it, with Peter as its first Pope.

O God of spirits and of all flesh, You have trampled upon death and have abolished the power of the devil, giving life to Your world. Give rest to the soul of Your departed servant the Priest Hermann in a place of light, in a place of repose, in a place of refreshment, where there is no pain, sorrow, and suffering. As a good and loving God, forgive every sin he has committed in thought, word or deed, for there is no one who lives and does not sin. You alone are without sin. Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your word is truth. For You are the resurrection, the life, and the repose of Your departed servant, the Priest Hermann, Christ our God, and to You we give glory, with Your eternal Father and Your allholy, good and life‑giving Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
