Giant Virgin Mary Statue to be Erected Near Her Turkish Abode

The municipality of Selcuk, a town in western Turkey where Virgin Mary is believed to have spent her last days, plans to erect a giant statue dedicated to her in the fashion of the notable statue in Brazil depicting her son.

Virgin Mary House, a stone structure on the outskirts of Bulbul Mountain, is a popular spot among Christian pilgrims since its discovery in the 19th century. Looking to boost faith tourism revenues, Selcuk Mayor Zeynel Bakici said they would erect "a splendid statue" depicting the sacred figure, the same day he announced they were seeking to host an international faith tourism event next year. "Virgin Mary House receives 2.5 million visitors every year despite its authenticity while Portugal's Fatima hosts 5 million tourists every year," he said, referring to the town where the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared to three children in 1917, making it a revered pilgrimage site. "We have to market our town better," he told a tourism event on Saturday.

I rely on Christ and the Holy Spirit He has given to all believers. That should be more than sufficient.

We have no one in the NT praying to Mary or any other believer.

We have no admonition in the NT to pray to any departed believer or any existing believer.

That should be sufficient evidence as to why we are not to pray to Mary or any departed or existing believer.

Correction....roman catholics pray TO Mary and others in violation of the Word. Too many catholic writings say so for you to try and deny it.

If and when Catholics pray to/through Mary, they are praying to Christ who alone has the power to grant our needs...no Catholic that I know of thinks that Mary has supernatural powers....she answers our prayers through the efforts of her Son....the last 1/2 of the Hail Mary says Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death...

Do we really have to post the evidence??

. The phrase Holy Mother of God is NOT found in Scripture.

Neither is Holy Trinity.

And yet Christians have been praying to Mary, departed believers, and existing believers virtually since the beginning of Christianity. Are there any commentaries that explain why the evidence from Scripture that was not sufficient during all those centuries suddenly became sufficient within the last 200-300 years?

Of which we only have evidence beginning in the 3rd century.

It doesn't take a long time for false teaching to creep in. Recall, Paul and John wrote against the false teachings of their day.

A word to the wise is sufficient.

Could be a ‘bombshell’.

I did not realize that it specifically stated that we pray to Mary.

Many things 'specifically stated' get overlooked or not taught.

When did Christians first start proclaiming that we should NOT pray to Mary? And who were they? Do you have any information on that?

Well...

...when the boat arrived on the remote island and Catholic missionaries taught the natives...

...the island diseases; to which the natives had natural immunity; sickened and killed the Fathers, leaving only the precious BOOK behind.

Reading through the BOOK; the natives became aware of their sins, repented and believed on Christ's promises.

They never learned ANYTHING much about Mary.

Perhaps she needs to visit them.

Acts 8:26-40

26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is a desert place. 27 And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, "Go over and join this chariot." 30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?" 31 And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this:

"Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter
and like a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he opens not his mouth.
33 In his humiliation justice was denied him.
    Who can describe his generation?
For his life is taken away from the earth."

34 And the eunuch said to Philip, "About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?" 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, "See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?" 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

I guess that explains how those 7 (at least) Catholic churches in Asia went off the rails.
