Mark Driscoll finally made it official: Heâs starting a new church in Phoenix. The culmination of a comeback that has been gaining steam over the past year, the former Mars Hill pastor announced the news of The Trinity Church on Monday by email, Twitter and a new website.
In a folksy video on the site, which begins with a âhowdyâ from Driscoll, the pastor said he and his wife, Grace, sitting by his side, were âhoping, trusting, praying, planning and also a littleâ â he made a jokey grimace â âworrying about planting a church here.â

I think he should take time to make sure his issues are resolved.
...but who am I to judge the servant of another?
Wasn’t this guy caught up in some scandal?
Can’t remember the details...
I was not a fan of Driscoll. He made my skin crawl when I read some of this articles in the past but I do hope for the best and that he turns his heart over to Christ.
I attended his church a few times in Seattle before the fall from grace. I actually liked his style and his messages. I pray all issues are resolved and through this, he can have an even greater impact for the Kingdom.
A very talented man. Blown to bits by his own arrogance.
It’s too soon for him to re-enter. He needs 5 years with an old wise man in some obscure place.
Wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Ted Haggard has a thriving church here in Colorado Springs despite being caught snorting coke off a gay prostitute’s ass. Amazing what some people will fall for.
Grifters got to grift.
Best wishes to his future congregants.
"He's Baaaack!"
No surprise. Almost a certainty he would pop up somewhere.
...but who am I to judge the servant of another?
We shall see.
Are you saying Mr. Driscoll is not a servant of Jesus Christ? If he is, and so are you, then your reference doesn't really make sense.
That said, I agree with your post wishing his future congregants well. I'm concerned at the way his decision to proceed is portrayed: as his decision. One recent emphasis I've received from the Lord is not to go off half-cocked under my own steam, to mix metaphors, but rather to proceed not on my projects but instead on His. He says he is "hoping, trusting, praying, planning and also a little...worrying about planting a church here." How about "obeying?"
Romans 14:4 (KJV) Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth . Yea, he shall be holden up : for God is able to make him stand .
Thanks. In that passage, Paul is writing about the dietary scruples of some Christian believers. However, I suppose the verse can be applied to the question of whether a person who has abused one position of authority (and may have some serious personal issues) should assume another position of the same kind.
I agree with Hebrews 11:6 that Mr. Driscoll seems ... how best to put it? ... personally driven in his actions, rather than clearly led by God. But anyway, if this gets off the ground, I hope his attendees find Christ and grow in faith, hope, and love, just as I would if they came to my church.
Reminds me of High Plains Drifter:
Callie Travers:
Just what do you consider going too far? Isn't forcible rape in broad daylight a misdemeanor in this town?
LOL, good one. I'm going to try to use that.
In this case, it is trumped by 1 Tim 3
“Refusing to judge doesn’t really make any sense.”
Judging for starting a church?
Not me. I wish he had placed himself under the authority of a mature group of Elders for at least three years first. That said, I don’t know any details beyond what I read about his exit from Mars Hill.
