Evangelical power brokers are losing their influence. Donald Trump is the proof.
Last Wednesday evening, a few hundred Christian conservatives gathered at Noah's Event Venue in suburban Des Moines for a rally with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry. It featured leading figures from both the local and national religious right, there to make the case that the movement must unite behind Cruz. "Ted Cruz is one of us," said Bob Vander Plaats, head of the FAMiLY Leader, Iowa's most influential evangelical organization. "He's trustworthy. He hates dishonest gain." Vander Plaats was both referencing Exodus 18:21 ("But select capable men from all the people--men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain") and taking a dig at Donald Trump.
The fragile truce between Cruz and Trump--and, more importantly, between Trump and the organized Christian right--had abruptly broken down, with religious conservative leaders lining up to stop the avaricious thrice-married billionaire from winning the Iowa caucuses. Leading female anti-abortion activists from organizations including the Susan B. Anthony List and Iowa Right to Life had already released an open letter urging Iowans to support anyone but Trump, writing that they were "disgusted by Mr. Trump's treatment of individuals, women, in particular." Christian talk radio hosts such as Michael Brown were lambasting Trump and lamenting the endorsement he received from Jerry Falwell Jr., one of Trump's few major evangelical backers. Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, had just endorsed Cruz--on Trump nemesis Megyn Kelly's TV show, no less--before flying to Iowa for the Des Moines rally....

isn’t Slate a rabid-dog left-wing site?
why should I care what they think? this is pure spin piece.
We're also joined by Michelle Goldberg, senior contributing writer at The Nation, author of several books, including The Means of Reproduction: Sex, Power, and the Future of the World. Her latest article is headlined "Hillary Clinton's Feminist Family Values."
Wow Jim, I guess this will get me booted but yep we are now for plural marriages and bankruptcies which steal money from other folks.
Christian folks, hmm maybe I’m in the wrong place.
Baloney 2.0
My pastors, some famous, some infamous, have invariably been dead wrong about politics. I recall one of the more famous ones regaling me with his story of how he had prayed with Bill Clinton just a week or so prior and emphatically told me how he was absolutely sure Clinton was a “born again Christian”.
Next Sunday was Lewinsky Sunday.
This article is really about how the MSM Uniparty needs to “game” Christians for their political and commercial purposes — and Christian support for Trump has them completely STUMPED.
LOL
We? You got a mouse in your pocket?
WE are electing a President. We are not electing a Pastor! Elections have consequences. We see the destruction of so much of America's past. But, the current group of Republican candidates consist of no perfect individuals. Cruz with his "loans", Rubio with his gang, Trump with his baggage, or maybe you would prefer Yeb or Hitlery.
Those last two are the preferred candidates from the RebubliCrats.
But, in order to elect a Republican, we must look to the ability to WIN. It has become obvious that there is one that towers above the others. Consistently polling in the lead, and gathering tens of thousands to events, regardless of bad weather, or distance.
I am a Christian. I will vote for Donald Trump. He is a proven winner. Bankruptcy is not theft. Jesus did not condemn the woman at the well.
I would be hesitant to throw such stones, since Scripture tells us that we have ALL sinned. Sin is "missing the mark", not perfection!
David slew Goliath. David sinned with Bathsheba. What does God say about David? David had lots of pride, and lots of faults...
Acts 13: 22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'
So what about Ronald Reagan’s 2 wives? He was not Christian enough for you? You can not understand that people can grow in different directions as they grow older? Why is it better to be forced to stay into an unhappy marriage? Victorian era has long ended.
There is no way that this Presidential campaign should shake anyone's faith.
It might have with the election of Obama but the opposite happened. There are new expectations for the future now.
Obviously u are wrong, I don’t profess to be Christian anything. As a matter of fact if someone brings out, “I’m Christian” that raises big red flags for me. Actions and deeds always (I’ll use your word) Trump words.
BTW, ignorance is no excuse...
Donald Trump Bankruptcy: A Breakdown Ahead of the 2016 Elections
...When it comes to the issue of Donald Trump's bankruptcy, we are only concerned with Chapters 7 and 11.
That's because a Chapter 7 filing is indicative of poor financial management skills on behalf of the debtor â a red flag for voters evaluating a presidential candidate. But a Chapter 11 filing doesn't necessarily indicate poor management. In fact, it can be seen as a tool that improves a company's value for investors.
Here's the difference:
Chapter 7 bankruptcy: Allows an individual to be freed of most debt in exchange for a ruined lined of credit for 10 years.
Chapter 11 bankruptcy: Allows a corporation to stay in business while it restructures its business and attempts to reduce its debt.
When Trump tweeted, "I never went bankrupt," he was being truthful. The real estate magnate has kept good order of his personal finances.
You see, all four of Donald Trump's bankruptcies were the Chapter 11 type. Each resulted from over-leveraged casino and hotel properties in Atlantic City. ...
I’ve Had it with the Line “But We’re Not Electing a Pastor-in-Chief”

Hahahahahahahahaha!
Poetic justice!
Cruz bus stuck in the mud. Ted is losing' it! Poor Teddy bears!
Sorry about that! It hurts when you back a loser. Sarah Palin sees something in "The Donald"! She endorsed him for the Presidential race this time!
Poor Teddy Bears...
Vander Plaats preaching about the evils of "dishonest gain?" That's absolutely hilarious!
How many wives did he have at one time?
Great post, WVK.
You'd rather us be for slandering people and voter intimidation?
Trump is not perfect. Neither is Cruz. Trump is far better equipped to lead this nation. Cruz is not.
