It was a brass snake, btw, lifted up upon a pole.

They were wandering around in the desert somewhere.....where did they come up with the ability to cast a brass snake???

You would be safe to presume they got the ability the same place they got the ability to cast a golden calf while Moses was upon the mountain.

Even in your advanced age you could really benefit and enjoy reading the books of Genesis, Exodus, and Leviticus. There is so much to learn there, and Jesus thought highly enough of the History that He referred to it often in His Ministry. That scene in John three, where Jesus reveals for Nicodemus a secret never revealed from the time of the Brass snake to the evening Jesus spoke with Nicodemus. Things like that are astonishing affirmations of God's plan and Grace.
