Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The birth of John to Zechariah and Elizabeth is very similar to a pattern established in the Hebrew Scriptures, what Christians call the "Old Testament". In fact, the similarity presents these two Books to be one seamless narrative. Like the Patriarchs of Genesis, Samuel and Samson in the time of the Judges, and even the infertile woman who is blessed by Elisha, the miraculous pregnancy of a woman who is "too old" is a recurring theme.

In another continuation of the theme, Gabriel announced that John would not drink alcohol nor cut his hair. This was the ordinance of the Nazirites, and was a form of dedication to God that was visible to all. Samson was also dedicated as a Nazirite, but broke his vows because he was impulsive and could not control his desires. A man could be a Nazirite for a limited time frame, or it could be a life-long calling, which is what was intended for John.

Even before his birth, we have gotten a good description of what he is going to be like from the Angel Gabriel. No Wonder Zechariah was speechless!
