The Assumption of Mary in History[Catholic Caucus]
Catholic Answers | 8-14-2015 | Tim Staples

As we approach the great Feast of the Assumption of Mary, and having written a post on the biblical evidence for the Assumption of Mary this time last year, I thought I would change gears and consider the historical evidence for the Assumption in honor of this year's Feast Day.

In summary, the doctrine of the Assumption of Mary began with an historical event that is alluded to in Scripture and has been believed in the Church for 2,000 years. It was passed down in the Oral Tradition of the Church and developed over the centuries, but it was always believed by the Catholic faithful. Let us examine the facts:

Here is a great quote on the Virgin Mary from James Kiefer:

“Little is known of the life of the Virgin Mary except insofar as it intersects with the life of her Son, and there is an appropriateness in this.

The Scriptures record her words to the angel Gabriel, to her kinswoman Elizabeth, to her Son on two occasions. But the only recorded saying of hers to what may be called ordinary, run-of-the-mill hearers is her instruction to the servants at the wedding feast, to whom she says simply, indicating her Son, ‘Whatever he says to you, do it.’

This we may take to be the summation of her message to the world. If we listen to her, she will tell us, ‘Listen to Him. Listen to my Son. Do what He tells you.’ When we see her, we see her pointing to her Son.

If our regard for the Blessed Virgin does not have the immediate effect of turning our attention from her to the One whom she carried in her womb for nine months and suckled at her breast, to the Incarnate God, the Word made flesh, then we may be sure that it is not the kind of regard that she seeks. A right regard for her will always direct us to Him Who found in her His first earthly dwelling-place.”

Thanks, today is the Feast of the Assumption. I thought I’d post something for that today out of respect for my heavenly mother.

You done good, and Mary appreciates it! So does her Son!

My husband remarked yesterday on how one of our local parishes had a huge Assumption [beautiful] painting on the front of their bulletin, but with a big-enough-type-font right below it that said, "This Year the Feast of the Assumption is not a Holy Day of Obligation."

He did a bit of a roll eye on that one; Our Poor Sorrowful Mother gets a bunch of grief all over the place.

Out of curiosity, are all those removed comments nasty, hateful and blasphemous, or do they simply disagree with the Catholic view of Mary?

"This Year the Feast of the Assumption is not a Holy Day of Obligation."

Apparently, church leadership thinks two days of Mass in a row is too much of a burden for us.

The near full house we had at our High Mass this morning suggested otherwise.

Elsie, I guess you just somehow missed this part of the FR rules about religion "caucus" threads:

"Religion Forum threads labeled "Caucus" --- Caucus threads are closed to any poster who is not currently and actively a member of the caucus group. For instance, if it says "Catholic Caucus" and you are not currently, actively Catholic, then do not post to the thread."
