A Kentucky coal miner died after refusing treatment for a Sunday-morning snake bit.
John David Brock, a member of the Holiness faith, was bitten by a rattlesnake and died four hours later, according to a CBS affiliate.
Brock had other health problems, and the official cause of death will be determined from medical records.
Snake-handling churches emerged in the early 20th century. It gained popularity in the last few years through the reality show Snake Salvation. The pastor in Snake Salvation, Jamie Coots, died of a snake bite in 2014.
The CBS affiliate says Brock is the second person to die of a snake bite this year in his congregation.
...ouch, even BETTER one!!
What part of “you shall NOT put your Lord God to the test” do you guys not get??
We have all the snake handlers in DC we need. They rarely get bit.
As for the people knowing how to deal with dangerous animals/creatures, Yup. More is better.
“Pretty sure ... no, make that 100% sure ... that the people who do this point directly to the verse from Mark quoted above and say that they are following the Bible, the Bible alone, and nothing but the Bible, sola scriptura.”
Now, dear Campion, I think you know that every claimed tradition in differing denominations is later justified by pointing to some obscure Scripture, or stitched together from disparate pieces of Scripture to back fill a practice.
So, of course, in this case they have something to point to in order to support their tradition. That is not unusual at all.
literalism is not the same as sola scriptura.
At a minimum, it is the historical/grammatical hermeneutic that, like Constitutional originalism, searches out the intent of the author.
Look more like Darwin Award Winners to me.
Dropping like flies, aren’t they?
The fact remains that they will tell you that the Bible alone is their guide.
Zot
Saying “the Bible is my guide” and saying “the Bible properly understood is my guide” are entirely different things.
“sola scriptura.”
Compared to all the people who believe “sola scripture” the percentage of snake handlers is statistically non-existent.
Zot
Not so.
The Pentecostals have long been known to be hermeneutically-challenged by taking a passage that is exclusively addressed to the Apostles, and limited to a period of time before the sign-gifts eventually faded.
If you don't understand that, your interpretation will be all over the map.
Roy Zuck wrote the best work (and is college text) on this subject, "Basic Bible Interpretation."
Anyway...he was permanently zotted...which was my line of thinking. Sorry!
No problem. I assumed you didn’t know zot is my FR name.
Especially that part in Mark was added years later.
That seems to be the standard interpretation.
But, even if it isn’t so, that passage, in a ‘whole bible’ context is talking about a situation similar to that which confronted the Apostle Paul on the island of Malta. He was accidentally bitten by a snake; he didn’t seek out a snake and dare it to bite him.
And he wasn’t harmed. AND it was a big red alert signal (a sign) to the people of Malta that something special was going on with this man, Paul.
It was all about Paul and how he survived the snake bite showing he was of G-d. Then many years later that snake handling verse(s) was added. So it’s all about how Paul survived that instance in his ministry.
“The fact remains that they will tell you that the Bible alone is their guide.”
I agree. Of course they will. These tradition is equal to Scripture groups always do.
