“God has the ability to do anything He wishes” um, not really. God cannot do what is contrary to His Righteousness or His Omniscience. Ex: If God could learn, He would not be Omniscient.

All sin is mortal!

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death.

Ezekiel 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die.

since everyone dies...

John 20:21 " Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Jesus tells them as the Father sent me so I sent you.

We believe he is declaring as he was to the Father so is the Apostles in Authority concerning especially confession. Catholics believe he is giving the Apostles the ability here with a special unction when he breathed on them. Remember this is before Pentecost in the book of Acts when the Holy spirit came upon all in the group. So Jesus declares

"John 20:23 - Jesus says, "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained." In order for the apostles to exercise this gift of forgiving sins, the penitents must orally confess their sins to them because the apostles are not mind readers. We believe The text makes this very clear."

How can you retain or forgive sins unless Jesus gave you the authority. It does not make any sense otherwise.

“no money is ever exchanged.

I don’t know if that is true today or not, but I know for sure that hasn’t always been the case. St. Peter’s Basilica stands as a testament to the sale of indulgences.

And the need for baptism is shown when St. Peter flatly tells us: “Baptism now saves you” (1 Peter 3:21).

St. Paul is very clear about the possibility of us committing mortal sin. He tells us: “Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

It is really sad that this person quotes partial verses and takes others out of context to create false doctrine...Nothing but deception...

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus said that to look on a woman with lust was to have committed adultery in your heart with her. And that hating was equivalent to murder.

He made no distinction between *big* sins or *little* sins.

On the contrary, James tells us that if we've broken one law, we're guilty of all. ALL sin is disobeying the God who gave us the law. It's law breaking and it makes no difference if we think it's a *biggie* or not.

I forgot how much extra stuff your church added to salvation.

Don’t mean to be confrontational.

When Christ was angered and threw the money changers out of the temple, was He guilty of a sin worth eternal punishment????

What law did He break by doing that?

And at last count, ALL the Apostles upon whom Jesus as God with us gave this baptism of His Spirit Directly are dead now. Jesus did not specify they could pass this Divine authority on.

1 John 5 in context:

16If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. 17All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.

this is speaking of sin that leads to earthly death! not eternal death. The other point of this is that if they have died, it is too late to pray for them!

Catholics can’t leave Protestant threads be.

If you can come on a Protestant thread, why can’t Protestants come on your thread?

Better than this!

Especially after Jim Robinson’s post the other day. Some of these same people supported his actions.

PROBABLY?

Maybe not....

Is that your opinion or God’s about that?

Seems to me that men want to classify sin so as to feel that they’re not so bad after all, because gee, they don’t do the bad things that Joe over there does. They’re better than him and if he can get in, they ought to be able to as well.

It’s pretty common among people who depend on works.

More like how much everybody else has tried to strip away. Sorry if it’s hard, but we can’t strip down salvation for our own convenience.

Confessing in private to a man and having that person pronounce judgement and penance is not biblical,

Sure it is, and the biblical references have been posted in this thread. When you confess to a Catholic priest, you are, in effect, confessing to Christ...the priest is merely acting as a vehicle through which we reach Christ....I didn't invent it, Christ did. The priest forgives nothing, Christ does the forgiving (we offended Him, not the priest)....for one thousand six hundred years, ALL Christians accepted that...now please, don't you change the rules....
