President Vladimir Putin, former KGB agent of a once-atheist nation, rebukes America, a once-Christian nation by saying that by forsaking traditional Christian values and putting same-sex marriage on the same level as traditional marriage with a man, woman, and children, the nation is forsaking God and believing in Satan and will be led into degradation and chaotic darkness.
At the height of the Cold War, it was common for American conservatives to label the officially atheist Soviet Union a “godless nation.”
More than two decades on, history has come full circle, as the Kremlin and its allies in the Russian Orthodox Church hurl the same allegation at the West.
“Many Euro-Atlantic countries have moved away from their roots, including Christian values,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a recent keynote speech. “Policies are being pursued that place on the same level a multi-child family and a same-sex partnership, a faith in God and a belief in Satan. This is the path to degradation.”
In his state of the nation address in mid-December, Mr. Putin also portrayed Russia as a staunch defender of “traditional values” against what he depicted as the morally bankrupt West. Social and religious conservatism, the former KGB officer insisted, is the only way to prevent the world from slipping into “chaotic darkness.”
As part of this defense of “Christian values,” Russia has adopted a law banning “homosexual propaganda” and another that makes it a criminal offense to “insult” the religious sensibilities of believers.
The law on religious sensibilities was adopted in the wake of a protest in Moscow’s largest cathedral by a female punk rock group against the Orthodox Church’s support of Mr. Putin. Kremlin-run television said the group’s “demonic” protest was funded by “some Americans.”

It’s really not a matter of “we” and “them” with me. When you say “we” it doesn’t apply to me because I don’t even like New America (the America I loved died some time ago) much less NATO. It would be difficult to find a more wicked nation than Iran. Putin has chosen Iran over Israel. It’s unclear how that insures Russia’s survival and it’s certainly unclear how it makes Russia more Christian than any other country.

The are, of course the state has a vested interest in doing something. Other wise they might have one the most serious demographic crisis in the modern era.
According to what I have found, there was a peak of something like 280 abortions per 100 live births in early 90’s Russia. They didn’t reach 100 abortions per 100 live births until 2006-2007. Then the rate fell to 42 abortions per 100 live births in 2012.

I think it is far more complicated than just Russia choosing Iran over Israel. From their perspective, I think they are choosing survival of Russia over non-survival. Like I said, they have to trade with someone. I think they shouldn’t help Iran, but I can’t fairly project my reasons for their reasons. They are vastly different.
As for the “we” comment, it is “we” whether we like it or not. And I tend to agree with you. I don’t like it either.
Are you telling us that we practically have Manchurian Candidates?
BTW, if Russia is wrong about everything else in the world it does not mean they are wrong about this issue. It is a common tactic in debate to use diversion and smears rather than to address the actual issue. On the issues of homosexuality, religious freedom and family values, Russia’s Putin is correct. You can smear the messenger or his country and may be right or wrong on another issue. That is irrelevant to the topic.
I find it most interesting that the history of the issue is brought up — the U.S. used to criticize Russia for this very thing.
It is a disconnect here.
Russia, and many other countries, have a good reason to distrust the American view of Christianity.
I’m just saying, since Putin is a clever demagogue and a genuinely evil man, his goal in bringing making this distinction may not be to further the cause of Christ and Christians in America. It’s probably best not to consider him and ally on this or any other issue.
Like someone said, Putin’s like Trump. You don’t admire him and he shoots his mouth off, but it’s good to hear from he speaks the truth and you appreciate him for it, while not wanting him as a role model in the least.
I’ve been struggling for years with this question of whether Putin is being cynical with his rhetoric about defending Christendom given his personal moral lapses. I’m slowing coming to the belief that he may be sincere, at least some days of the week.
The news of the falling abortion rate in Russia is good to hear. They need to turn their demographic collapse around if they really want to be a bulwark for Christians in coming years. It would be nice to have somewhere to flee to should things continue as they are here in America.

First, you have not proven that. You assume that as fact.
Second, if we are truly talking about a Christian view of the world, we are all evil, depraved, fallen, sinful people in need of a Savior. That does not change the truth of his statement. Nothing becomes untrue just because the messenger is imperfect.
Third, On this issue he is an ally. Obviously! Neither you nor I know his motives. Only God knows. But if he is saying something true, I am not so blinded by hatred for Russia that I cannot admit it is true and applaud.
We are all sinners in need of redemption. When government endorses sin, it becomes an enemy of the gospel. We went from simply not making the sin of homosexuality illegal to a full out preference for sinful values over moral values. This is a BIG deal. It is against everything the Founders of this Nation taught, It is contrary to what we as a nation used to voice to other nations. We have completely reversed the values we used to trumpet to countries like Russia. Should they not notice? Should they not be offended that now we are pushing the OPPOSITE?
The gates of Hell will not prevail against the Church. The Church has survived persecution before. THAT DOES NOT MEAN WE SHOULD BE INDIFFERENT TO IT IN A CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC GOVERNMENT WHERE WE THE PEOPLE ARE SUPPOSEDLY THE GOVERNMENT.
If Russia wants to support religious freedom and family values, good for them. The truth is the truth. We don't own the truth no matter how far we stray from Judeo/Christian values just because we are Americans. God can judge us and give His blessings to another.
