SINGAPORE Over 50,000 Christians who gathered to pray for the growing unity among churches and within the nation at the Jubilee Day of Prayer event to mark Singapore's 50th year of independence were joined by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong today (July 5).
President Tony Tan and his wife, Mary Tan, as well as Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen were also among the crowd at the Singapore Sports Hub.
The event, which was co-organised by the National Council of Churches in Singapore (NCCS) and the Evangelical Fellowship of Singapore, took an offering, which will be donated to help the poor and needy in Singapore regardless of race, religion and language, the organisers said in a fact sheet.
NCCS President Bishop Wee Boon Hup, Chairman of JDOP 2015 said: The gathering of Christians from different denominations, churches and organisations, in one day at one place as one Christian community, underscore the unity of our community and the love we have for Singapore.
It ended with a Jubilee wave with placards given to participants in their gift packs.
As Singapore turns 50 this year, we want to give thanks for Gods blessings, and pray for Gods continued blessings, as we pass on this legacy of thanksgiving, unity and revival to the next generation, Executive Secretary of the event, Rev Tony Yeo, said.
