Priests Are Bucking Catholic Church Leadership to Support Same-Sex Marriage in Ireland
The Washington Post ^ | 5/20/15 | Sarah Kaplan

For the Rev. Pádraig Standún, a Catholic priest in western Ireland, voting “yes” is a matter of what’s right. To another Irish priest, the Rev. Iggy O’Donovan, it’s about creating an inclusive state.

To the Rev. Martin Dolan, Ireland’s upcoming referendum on same-sex marriage is deeply personal.

“I’m gay myself,” he announced to his Dublin congregation in January. It was a surprise ending to Dolan’s homily, in which he urged his congregation to vote “yes” in the referendum. But his parishioners took it in stride — they gave him a standing ovation, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

As the Friday referendum approaches, Ireland seems poised to become the first nation to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote. The Catholic Church itself opposes the measure.

In at least a few cases, though, Irish Catholics may vote “yes” not in spite of their priests, but alongside them. Standún, O’Donovan and Dolan are among a group of priests who have bucked Church leadership to voice support for the amendment. Speaking to BuzzFeed, The Rev. Tony Flannery, founder of the reform-minded Irish Association of Catholic Priests, estimated that 25 percent of the country’s clergy would vote”yes.”

Recent polls show a significant majority of voters favor a constitutional amendment to expand the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples — one of many signs in recent decades of the greatly diminished influence of the Catholic Church, which also unsuccessfully opposed a 1995 referendum in which Ireland legalized divorce.

Said priests need to be excommunicated immediately, but it won’t happen.

(*sigh*) Yep...

But his parishioners took it in stride — they gave him a standing ovation

Why am I completely unsurprised? "If you were of the world, the world would love what is its own... [cf. John 15:19]"... just as this blind and selfish crowd did. Applaud the vice of someone else, and it gives one a feeling of entitlement for keeping your own vices (and for being immune from criticism about them).

It's the same nauseating syndrome which made people give a standing ovation to Paul Reubens (a.k.a. "Pee Wee Herman") when he made a return at the MTV music awards, and which made people applaud wildly when David Letterman admitted that he'd sexually used numerous women who worked for him on his show, and which made every last modern western audience applaud wildly whenever anyone even remotely well-known (or on a well-known TV show/movie) "came out" as "gay".

"Oh, we're just showing our support for someone making a courageous admission!", they say. Sure. Mm-hmm. And if someone who's gay comes out and says that they're abandoning the lifestyle and seeking therapy, they'd applaud all the louder (since that takes far more courage, these days)? I really, REALLY don't think so.

Revelation 18

4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

Patrick Fitzthomas and Thomas Fitzpatrick. The Irish have been conquered by most of Europe at one time or another. Now they’ve been conquered by sodomites.

Sir, do you see why those of us on the other side of the Tiber not trust what Rome says?

If this was an LCMS pastor, some on FR would be trumpeting “The LCMS Just Went GAY!!!” Of course, if he was a LCMS pastor, we would send in the ultimate shock troop to solve the issue. The Ladies Altar Guild.

Still, thank you for posting this. I do not mean to sound like I am attacking you. The position my Catholic cousins are in is very sticky, and only going to get worse till either discipline is enforced or the schism becomes open.

Maybe it's time for the Catholic church to start following the Bible that it claims it wrote.

Sexual Immorality Defiles the Church

1 Corinthians 5:1-13 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.

For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people—not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”

When a man I know moved out of town, he got up in front of his choir and announced he was a homosexual. He did not get a standing ovation. He was kicked out right then. That is the difference between the SBC and Catholics. How in the world can people stay in any religion that allows this?

"That is the difference between the SBC and Catholics."

I've been in Protestant churches where a homo would absolutely get a standing ovation (and had in some instances, though not while I was there), whereas at my Catholic parish, I don't believe anyone would even try to make that kind of announcement. From my perspective, THAT is the difference between Protestants and Catholics...The reality is that liberals, regardless of whatever church they claim to belong to, tend to gather at and co-opt specific parishes/locations, and use those locations to their foul ends.

Doesn't look like it to me...Looks like they are following right in line with the Catholic Church leadership...

Let's wait and see how many of them get excommunicated...
